Drought resistant plants
« on: September 09, 2014, 09:38:44 am »
I'm wondering if there is anything that I can plant that attracts honeybees and is drought resistant. It's hard to get water where I want to plant. Any ideas

I second the sedum, it blooms early fall and the bees are all over it.

Russian Sage, a good one for honey bees, and lots of other polinators

And of course lavendar, rosemary, and thyme

Vitex if it will live that far north. It blooms when it rains in Texas, but it has not died between, even my younger bushes, and the bees adore it

That's a hard question, not being from your area.  Sedum came to mind because it is in bloom now and my bees are all over it.  I would suggest anything native, but that doesn't mean the bees will work it. You might contact your local county extension office for a list of plants that meet your requirements.  That's your tax dollars working for you.  Here in Kansas, they have volunteers that are just sitting and waiting for someone to call or walk in with a question during the months of March through October.  The same might be true in Washington.

Weeds of course are drought resistant plants ???, I have seen bees working Lambsquarter (the bloom) i'm thinking for pollen, also Thorny pig weed seed heads in bloom ( a nauseous Weed), Iron weed is another that they work, but i've not ever seen bees working it? There are many more weeds that are drought resistant that bees work, but i allow them to grow in fence rows only. 8) Jack
