Cicada killer wasps are mostly black with yellow squares on tip of abdomen, reddish thorax and head. Tarantula hawk wasps are almost totally solid black/steel  blue. Both have impressive stingers over 1/4 inch long. Neither are inclined to attack people without provocation.

I guess i'm a slow learner ???, i got four more hits from a red wasp nest yesterday. :o My 79 3/4 ton pick-up has been setting 3 months with a rear flat tire, i thought i'd get it going before that white crap starts falling. The flat was no problem, but when i raised the hood to charge the battery, surprise, surprise :o, a big nest of red wasp between the fender well and battery, and with my arm pushing the hood up they nailed me on my left side and under the arm :'(. Now that hurt, it gave me some pleasure to watch them twist and turn when i hit them with wasp spray 8).( I know i'm sick) but they started it. At least they didn't sting my pretty face, because i have to work the bee booth at the Farm Fest Today. 8) Jack

You're funny Jack  ;)  Now hopefully that's the only red wasp nest in your area. I sure hope so for your sake.

By the way, how would we know if you have a pretty face... ??
