Black powder

  So, I have owned, and built some NICE rifles in my time. I know how to shoot sub moa groups, but these Bone Collectors from TC are driving me up a wall..    NOTHING I have tried will make them shoot. The best I can do is a nine inch group at 100 yards..   

   My wife and I both have one, we bought them last year. I did not spend a LOT of time getting them accurate..  9 inches at 100 yards is within the kill zone, and proved adequate in filling our tags.. however...  The season is fast approaching, so I thought I might try some different loads and get them closer to two or three inch groups at 100 yards..

  I have multiple powders and pellets, as well as multiple styles of bullets and sabots, with different types of bullets to shoot in the sabots.  I have run 80 to 150 grains of powder with most conceivable combinations.  So far, my own cast home made 240 grain .44 bullet in a sabot in front of 100 grains of triple 7 is the only one that will get me to 9 inch groups...  White hots with the same bullet give similar results. Pyrodex pellets and loose powders open the groups beyond 12" at 100 yards.
   Hornady SST's, Powerbelts, Aerolite's, Harvesters, Spit fires, and Barnes expanders all open the groups up to around 12" as well..   With CAREFUL shooting I can keep all shots on a paper plate at 100 yards. With less care I can shoot sub MOA groups out of my M1 Garand at the same distance.  Having TWO black powder rifles that both shoot exactly the same makes me think there is something I am not doing correctly...

   I have tried to get a good group with a CLEAN barrel, and with fowling shots, and with a downright dirty barrel. I am more or less grasping at straws now..   So you black powder guys and gals, tell me what I am doing wrong!!

I always wanted to get into black powder even went so far as to trade into a ruger six shooter black powder.  Put it in with the rest of my guns and forgot about it for a few years. took down the box a couple years ago and box was empty. Thought I had been broke into and who knows when.  I asked the wife and she said you remember that money I gave you you needed for the shop and wouldn't part with your guns.  Well I took it to the pawn shop and parted with it for you. Then conveniently lost the pawn ticket

My wife did that I would walk out of the house and NEVER go back!!!  I wouldnt even fight for divorce or ownership of anything.. I'd load my truck with my tools and drive away.

If my husband pawned something of mine and lost the ticket he became an ex husband.  Gee, he had my dog put to sleep while I was at work and got himself a nice divorce.

Ayup.. thats what I'm talkin bout,,   Cant have a trusting relationship if everything is not up front..  My wife would TELL me she was pawning my gun.. I'd say Nope! Then she'd make me go along while she did it..   :'(

  So I am assuming theres not to many black powder hunters here..   

   RR.. I have always wanted a pair of .45 Rugar old model army revolvers..  Just never got around to getting them..  I have had a few of other brands, and one .36 navy I really liked, it was a good shooting gun.

You might want to consider contacting Precision Rifle out of Canada to perhaps pick their brain

All they do, day in, day out is shoot black powder, bet they could help

I am officially a 444 man since it became legal to use them in the primitive weapons season here

Primitive use to mean black powder with either flint lock or percussion cap, open sights, then the inlines showed up, scopes became legal & then eventually 45/70's & 444's became legal

I killed quite a few deer with my old Thompson New Englander, using the round ball & patch & 100gr of TripleFG, fond memories

Nice JP!  I used to modify a LOT of 444 Marlins into woods guns. Shortening them up and adding permanent muzzle brakes, Holo sites or scopes, lightening them up as much as possible.. shortening the mag tube so it only held three rounds etc.. and of course fine tuning the trigger pull and break..  Those guys up Maine really liked their large caliber woods guns..   Built a 45-70 for a friend that was probably the most astounding gun I have ever held in my hands.. Custom laminated stock etc..  put a thumb tack in a paper plate to hold it on the backstop.. 4 out of 5 shots you could hit the thumb tack at 100 yards.   I should have kept that gun... but, I was in the process of building the turtle gun.. basically a 444 Marlin using a .300 belted magnum case shortened up a bit.. I do still have that one. Feeds better out of the magazine with the magnum case than it did with rimmed cases.  Also like how it headspaces better..    Some days I miss being a gunsmith,, then I watch the news and I remember why I turned in my books.

Do you have a peep sight? My old work partner likes them for open sights.I shot his once and made 3in at 50 yds.I'm not a very good shot, so  I am a fan of the clipped mag.

Both rifles have scopes on them. Two different styles of scopes and power..  I have a banner 4X on mine, she has a leupold 4-12 on hers..   4X is plenty for me out to about 150 yards..  If I ever find a way to get my gun to shoot I will have to upgrade the scope..  mile long shots are possible here, limited only by what you can see and the GUN can hit..  as is, I'll not take a shot at anything over 120 to 130 yards.. at any greater range the shot deviation could well be outside the kill zone..  With any given gun I have, I put the old paper plate on a backstop..  So long as I can keep ALL shots within that paper plate at 100 yards, 200 yards or 1000 yards THAT is where I draw the line for that gun.

I shoot Ml's a lot. Have a T/C Hawkins 50 peep sight, a T/C plains rifle 50 4x weaver scope. and two Remington 700's one a 50 one a 54 scoped alike with Bushnell's 3x9.
Never needed more than 100 grains of Triple 7 in the 54 and never more than 80 grains of triple 7 in the 50's. Use the green MMP 50 cal Sabots with Speer 300gr. gold dot bullets and the purple MMP sabots with a 50csal speer HP gold dot bullet.

I would also check that the can't remember thingy is call is centered.

That QLA thing I couldn't r4emember the name of. Some have found them drilled off center.
