 How many bees does that kill, I would not want to put fire in my hive, if it got close to some comb it may catch the hole hive on fire.

Surprise--it doesn't kill any bees.  It  just sort of smolders slowly, no real flames.  The smoke chases the bees away to a safe distance.  In the worst scenarios, the process leaves a slightly charred line on the floor.
