Mystery ??
« on: January 05, 2015, 09:52:08 pm »
My son called and said i have some bad news dad :o. Said he was at one of my outyards looking for deer signs and seen two of my hives had been knock over and the bees were dead, said he left them alone because he didn't know what to do (he's not into bees. YET ;D). Well i drove up there (35 miles one way) and seen the two middle hives turned over (there 8 hives in that yard) they are all on concrete blocks, one hive was on it's back with the bottomboard still setting on the blocks and the lid about 2 ft. away the wind could blow all the way through it and some dead bees on the ground. I stood it up and  started to take it apart to salvage the honey (it was heavy), i heard a buzz the same time i felt a hit, my left hand and arm had 30 or more bees crawling on it, i put the lid on it and set it back on the bottomboaed, 2 deeps ans a med. super (it strained my milk) ;D, but got it done .
The other one  was up side down with the lid still on and the bottomboard  still on the blocks, it also was 2 deeps and a med. super, not as heavy but still enough stores left. I pecked on the side and sure enough  i heard a loud buzz (put my smock and hood on this time :D. and got it back on the bottomboard, bees strarted coming out the top entrance at me :o. These hives are about 5 ft. apart with 4 hives in the front row and 4 hives in back of them. The hives turned over was the two in the middle of the front row? They are in the woods below hills on the east and north i don't know how long they were turned over and we've had several nights in the 20's and todays high was 30F, never seen any sign of vandals or the leaves shuffled around the hives? We did have some strong winds, but the hives were to heavy to be blowed over?? Now to wait and see if they make it through the winter, the boxes never came apart when i set them up and set them back on the blocks there was leaves froze to the hive parts that came in contact to the ground so they had to of been that way for awhile? I'm thinking deer maybe? any idea's or advice? Jack

Sorry to hear about that Jack. You've done all you can do really. I will say that the bees are incredible when it comes to surviving this sort of thing though. I had 2 hives vandalized, knocked clean apart, set there for 3 days, one of them with enough rain that the telescoping covers were full of water, and they survived.
I don't know what caused your trouble, but mine have been the two legged variety the twice it's happened.

Although Missouri has some black bears, this doesn't sound like bears.  You didn't mention anything about cattle, so I am dismissing that idea.  Is there any sign of deer rubbing their antlers on the boxes?  I hope those remaining bees are big enough to cluster and make it to spring.  It's always something.

Bears would have tore them apart for the larva, no sign of cattle (tracks, manure, ect.), there are lots of deer but no antler marks or tracks, very few youngsters around close. Very strange?? Jack

Weather can be bad sometimes....And bees do survive.  A tornado scattered three of my hives 18 months ago and they survived.  Good luck on your efforts to set them up again Jack.  :)

Sorry to hear about your troubles.  I guess all i can say is they were both still alive?  I would assume you had already counted them out, so there is that silver lining.  If they don't survive, you are to where you were on the trip up?

Best of luck!

In my opinion, it seems that hives that heavy would have to have been pushed over by a mischievious two legged culpit.. get that camera up asap

That was my first thought, but there was 6 more within 5 ft. of each other not touched and it's been to cold for them to break cluster and attack who or what knocked them over? Jack

they broke cluster to come out and see what you were doing to them and you were trying to be gental. they went over harder and would have came boiling out when pushed over. regardless of temperature.

I have never seen a deer knock over a hive,  but I know cows like to rub against them and will knock them over,  so perhaps deer will too.

Too late now,  but I put a 1" ratchet strap around all my hives,  this way if they do get knocked over they stay intact and closed up.   I mainly do it because of bear, but it helps with whatever the reason.   If it were two legged vandals,  I would suspect they would have done more than just two. Obviously whatever satisfaction they would get by doing it would be multiplied the more times they did it.
