night light installed above hives

They just installed a street light above my hives in a out yard. Any concerns with this?

 Yes on warm days and in the summer your bees will be at the light and may end up dead from to much fly time.

These are behind gates but I was wondering about the flying.

I know on several trap outs the home owner was complaining about bees flying to their porch lights. Thats what made me think when I saw the new night light go up last night.

Would it help if i turned the hives to where the hive opening was away from the light. Back of hive

I have street lights in our neighbourhood but have never noticed any problem with them attracting the bees?

If the light doesnt come on before the bees have retreated for the night all will be well..   My fathers farm has a night light about 25 yards from the big feral hive in the bee tree and it causes no problems..

Street lights come on with a photo eye just after dusk.  So there shouldn't be a problem.  Unless of course you break the last beer bottle out of a 12 pack over the hive at midnight. at that point the street light will be the least of your worries :o

My experience has been if a light is within 15 feet of a hive and visible from the landing board/entrance, it will attract at least a few bees in the summer.  Rather or not it becomes a problem may depend on genetics, i don't know.  If it does become a problem for you, I would rotate the entrances away from the light; that would probably fix a problem IF it occurs. 

Another question to ponder is will the light attract wax moths!
