Actually, its past time.. at least in this neck of the woods..
I went into the hives today to clear out the sugar cakes and remove the tar paper.. There are a LOT of bees and large amounts of drone brood. It looks like were about three weeks ahead of last year.. I am hoping we do not suddenly get a week of freezing weather, it IS possible.. I have seen 20 foot drifts on my Birthday, which is the 12th.. SO Yall keep your fingers crossed!
With the odd weather, 75 degrees one day, and 28 degrees the next day, I was unsure if there was enough pollen and nectar coming in from Maples, pussywillow, etc... The first Hive I opened, relieved any worries I had...
Lots of brood, lots of drone cells.. I should be able to start making queens in about two weeks..
Three nucs got moved into hives, all of the hives got their supers installed.. 40 Plus drawn supers went on... Cutting out the Bur comb, I found m,uch to my delight, it was full of honey, so I saved some to EAT!!!! I laid it on the wagon box while I put the hive back together.. and when I got back... Guess who was already eating it?
That is Knightro He is a Spanadore Spaniel and Black Lab mix.. I am hoping he gets big enough the Coyotes wont eat him when pickings get lean. He has a long and illustrious career ahead of him, as a Farm guard, and as a Hunting retriever.. If he is anything like my last retriever, he will quickly perfect the disgusted look when I miss the pheasant he just flushed..
