les, i am thinking the queen candy wasn't exactly 'soft', but that's okay, it happens.  5 days.....she was alive in the cage on the 5th day which tells me the bees had accepted her, so her release by you was a good decision made.

like jen said, when i re-queen a hive, i lay the cage on top the frames and observe the bees behavior, (they are usually happy to receive a queen and one can tell by their behavior).  if the bees are accepting of the queen, they will gather on the cage with antennae in, and bees will fan around and outside of that cage.  if they have their butts in there trying to sting her or bite her, not a good sign.

my guess is after 5 days, and the bees are less aggressive, all is well now, relax, enjoy, leave them alone for another week or so, a queen reigns!

Tomorrow will be one week that I released my queen into the hive.  Will tomorrow be too soon to go back in a check for eggs and larva?

"Tomorrow will be one week that I released my queen into the hive.  Will tomorrow be too soon to go back in a check for eggs and larva?"

one week.......do a check les, it's not too soon to check on what's going on. not just a 'queen' check for eggs and larvae, but also what's going on in the hive as well, meaning the behavior of the bees, and activity........you may see eggs, you may see young larvae, if you don't, and if the queen hasn't started laying after one week, doesn't mean she's not a good queen. look especially at the frames in the center of where the queen would lay, does it look like the bees have spit shined and polished the cells in anticipation of the queen laying, and are the bees relatively 'docile', or are they still  cranky?

hope i made sense?

Today's visit to the hives.  Found both queens, saw eggs, larva and capped brood.  Do you hear that big sigh of relief? ;D.  What a difference in the temperament of the hive now that they have a laying queen.  Lovin' this learning process!

Riverbee, no dancing but there was a definite yahoo and a huge sigh of relief!  Also, it was so cool when my sweetie was able to identify eggs.  Unfortunately, he was unable to attend Rob's classes so he is playing catch up in the learning area.

I think I did the right thing?  Checked my one hive today (the package of bees where we didn't lose the queen) and found that every frame has comb on it except for the back side of the very outside frame.  There were eggs in the second to outside frame, so I figured it was time to add another brood box.  In one week, they have cranked up comb production.  I was outside watering and at the same time watching the bees going in and out of the hive.  I noticed that their habit of going in and out of the ventilation hole in the inside cover had changed and more of them were finally going in the bottom entrance.  I thought that this change of habit was an indication that things were changing inside the hive, getting too crowded at the top of the frames and they needed to fill up the bottoms of the frames......guess I was right.   I hope we get rain soon, it is so dry and I am already tired of dragging hose LOL.
P.S.  I just went back outside about two hours later and was working near the hive and it seemed noisy to me.  I walked around the front and it was like every bee was outside the hive trying to get in.  Could it be that the foragers that were out and about when I added the brood box are a bit confused?

were they trying to get in or just bearding?
Were they hanging around all grouped up or do you mean they were flying around in front of the hive?
   What were your temps Les?

LazyBkpr, they were flying around.  Today it appears they have settled down and were back to biz as usual.  More concerned with did I add the addl. brood box at the right time.

Sounds like they were orienting.. my wife wont go near the hives when there are a vast amount of young bees orienting..  thousands of them at times flying around in front of their hive memorizing it as their own. They can put up quite a roar...
The only other thing might have been robbing...  but they are not happy when this is going on, and the chances of getting stung when your within 50 feet go up exponentially with each foot closer you get. you will see bees fighting and rolling around, and if you watch them, you will see bees zig zag in front of the hive, timing their charge.. then they ZIP right past the guard bees into the hive.. if they are lucky...

Lazybkpr, I think you are correct about the orientation.  Checked out the hive this morning and they have all settled down and are doing their thing.
