mold?
« on: May 23, 2015, 03:10:18 pm »
Hey fellow keepers....my wife and I just did or 5 week inspection and found mold growing on the inside of our brood box. I have no idea why. We were wondering if it's crucial to get our frames into another box or will the bees do alright with it in there? Any help here would be appreciated. We don't want to disturb them anymore than we have to. Thanks.

Finding a bit of mold is no big issue, it probably just means your hive needs a bit more ventilation, increase it a bit. The bees will take care of the rest.

Ditto to Perry's post.

We have a large puddle to the W of this country. As a result the climate is mild and damp. To counteract the damp I raise my hives on 1 foot open hive stands. These raise the hives above the ground level micro climate and allow air circulation around the hive.

Thanks for the info guys. I maybe a bit jumpy about the welfare of my bees, I really enjoy having them and want to provide a healthy environment for them. That being said I couldn't wait any longer and transferred them into another box, and while I was doing that I saw 2 drones with shriveled wings. I know this may be a sign of varroa but I have seen no other supporting evidence. Mother nature can be a bit bitchy aye! Any suggestions?

Another box wont make any difference if its set up the same as the box they were in. The mold will just grow again..  A little info on your set up may help. Do you have the top entrance open or closed? Etc...

at 5 weeks you probably have some drones that have transfered over from the package they were shaken from. You had a great brood break so your mite levels should not be high yet. It is always a good idea to check and keep tabs on the little bloodsuckers though.

Suggestions?  Quit worrying, new papa. Let mother nature have a bit more chance.  :)

Do a mite count late July or early August.

as has already been said badgerbeek, ventilation, top and bottom.
also, as scott said drones or workers with deformed wings came from the package bees you received, and also, changing out the frames to another box will not matter as far as the mold is concerned.
i am in a river valley.  it's damp, and nights are cool here in the spring. we had frost on the ground one morning last week, and it's been raining off and on, and all day today. although a little northeast of me, you are probably experiencing some similar weather patterns?
