Hubby Has Tooth Ache
« on: June 02, 2015, 05:23:54 pm »
My hubby.... siiigh, he's been thru it! Surgery 6 weeks ago, recovered but week, went back to work last week, came home 4 days into it with the flu, running both ends for 12 hours, recovered but week. Now, he has a whopping tooth ache and can't get into dentist until Fri morning.

I know oil of clove is suppost to supress tooth pain, but do any of you know of some remedies that he can use until he sees the dentist friday, which is 4 days from now.

1... Let an aspirin melt on the tooth.

2... Ora-jel

I would have him go first thing tomorrow morning regardless of anything and have it taken care of.  That is miserable.  Can't think, sleep, work or eat without being in the way.  As for relief, I have heard of biting down on tea bag between teeth.  I have also heard of this:  http://www.thepaleosecret.com/2014/07/power-bee-propolis/

My grandpa would take a shot of whiskey and hold his head in such a way that the tooth would soak in the whiskey for a few minutes. The he would swallow the whiskey. Then repeat. And repeat again. And again. Maybe once more.
Sometimes, I think he just claimed to have a toothache. Come to think of it, me may have had false teeth.

Whiskey works.  Being from Kentucky I recommend bourbon not that nasty Canadian or Tennessee  stuff  :P  I did run into some home made stuff from North Carolina that might work in a pinch.

hmmm, whopping tooth ache.....?

tramadol.............. :D :D :D

if you don't have any tramadol,  800 milligrams of a NSAID, ( for example tylenol or 1extra strength tylenol coupled with 1 or 2 aleve tablets) and iddee's suggestion of the ora-gel.

personally i would call the dentist and ask for suggestions........
might get him in sooner for a quick look so he doesn't have to suffer............. ;)

ps jen, any swelling below the tooth, inside or outside?

Hi Riv  :)  upper molar, yes swelling inside. He's had this tooth ache off and on for the last 2-3 months I guess. He's using Naproxin and now Ambesol. He got up out of bed last night at 2am, drove out to Walmart to buy the Ambasol. You see, I wasn't too sympathetic because I had encouraged him to get that tooth fix before his surgery 7 weeks ago. Wouldn't listen. Thanks for letting me vent ~  ;)

Sounds like an abscessed tooth. antibiotics from the vet and within 24 hours he will feel the difference

jen, its abscessed.
any swelling indicates infection. 2 to 3 months now? tooth probably will come out.  ;D

naproxin is the same as alleve, and ambasol is similiar to iddee's suggestion on the oragel.

have him try as i said to reduce the pain until he can get in:
2 regular tylenol  (325 miilligrams each tablet) , or extra strength tylenol (cut in half to start out, one tablet is 500 milligrams) and take with two naproxin/alleve (one tablet of alleve = 220 milligrams). once in the morning, and before he goes to bed. mid day just have him take a dose of the tylenol, regular 2 tablets, or extra strength, cut in half.  this should reduce the pain, but will not take care of the infection.

if using tylenol extra strength at half dose isn't cutting it, have him take the full tablet. and lots of water.

not sure why his dentist is not giving advice to manage the pain until he can get in?

my tolerance for any pain is high, but not when it comes to my teeth.........
i am not a doc, but i learned a few things in back country medicine without the aid of narcotic drugs that kill pain.  hope this helps.

Listen to Blueblood---If the tooth is causing pain and there's swelling, you don't wait until it's convenient for the dentist.  The dentist (if  worth being called a professional) places you "inbetween" appointments and gives emergency treatment.
No questions asked.
[But until you get into the denstist's office, you can make a poultice with propolis and keep it in his mouth, between the inner cheek and against the painful gum.  I doubt if it'll cure, but it might alleviate the pain somewhat.]

Ef is right about  a good dentist!  I went in to see the dentist without an appointment announcing that if they couldn't see me then I'd go out in the parking lot and pull it with a pliers......They found a way to see me.  :-)

I feel his pain.

Thanks everyone  :)  I was looking for the alternative pain reducers this time. After hubby's surgery, then the flu (he was going both ends for 12 hours) his stomach wasn't handling the pills well. Good ideas here. I should make clear that it's not our dentist's lack of care in this case. Hubby already took unexpected time off with surgery and then the flu back to back. He's making due with amusol and naproxen. He felt better surpressing the pain during work until he could get into see the dentist, which will be tomorrow morning at 8am.

Blue- the page on propolis is great!
