Ticks

For chiggers, we powder our ankles with sulphur. I bet it would work for ticks.

tbonekel,I have used sulfur powder for years and it does help, i fill a cotton sock with sulfur powder and tie a knot in the top to keep it in. I keep it under the seat of my truck and when in tick country i pat the sock around my boots, ankles, and waist line, most times it works (not always). Another thing that helps, wash the clothes that you wear in tick country in the washer with Permethrin (can get at Wal Mart), one treatment will last 3 washings before you have to retreat. By doing this i'm usually tick free,but they are bad this year i pulled 5 off me on my last trip plus many crawling on my clothes. I have one outyard i dread going to because of the ticks. Jack

Put the chickens in it, keep them closed in for a couple weeks..  After that its their home, they will go back inside about dark every night, all you have to do is close the door.
  Make sure it has a roost, and boxes for them to lay.

Ticks have porous skin.  So they are very sensitive to dehydration in dry weather.  If you have a choice, check your out yards on hot dry afternoons.  The ticks will be hiding in the soil.   Otherwise I've always relied on deet based repellents sprayed on the clothes (not the skin).  For me, the worst part about ticks is the paranoia. Whenever I find one on me, I feel like there's more crawling around on my skin for a couple of days.

Yep, every little itch your expecting a tick..    I found 9 of them on me after checking an outyard yesterday... made me wonder of OA would kill them...   Tossed a couple in the pan of the vaporizor with some OA and turned it on.. yep, they were dead!

I need to go back to the tick infected outyard to check some nucs and probably take off honey on some of the hives, not looking forward to it . I just now quit scratching like my dog and looking for that tell, tell, bulls eye sign on my body. Counting from last Friday to now we've had over 5 in. of rain with prediction of 6 in. or more over the next 3 days, maybe it will drown those little devils. This is just as bad for honey production as drought,the bees fly between rains, but the rain has washed the nectar out of the flowers and come back hungry and eat up stores . I won't complain about all the rain, but i would like to see if i can find what we planted in the garden amongst the weeds Jack
