Honey Lozenges
« on: February 04, 2014, 12:43:05 pm »
anyone have a recipe for making their own honey lozenges for coughs and sore throats?  i have seen some on the interweb, and wondered if anyone has tried making their own.

last few days, i have received a number of phone calls for orders of honey for colds and sore throats, etc.  last night i received 3 phone calls.  couldn't fill the orders, was not feeling well myself. but thought, i might try making some lozenges.  i like the hall's honey lemon drops, but the light bulb went on about making my own.

anyone with a recipe?

We do the Amish way.  Spoonful of honey sprinkled with Cayenne pepper for sore throats.  Wouldn't mind finding out how to make that into a lozenger.  Will be watching to see what comes along.

Riverbee, here is the Wiki link to Fishermans Friend.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisherman%27s_Friend   Some ideas about ingredients. My wife waves me away when I pop one in; says they make her eyes water!  Fishermansfriend.com

......... :D

thanks crofter!  i have never seen those.  was researching some recipies on the net earlier today.  i am thinking this would be another avenue of tinkering in the winter, along with the lip balm.  i have customers that would probably buy some 'honey lozenges' along with honey during the winter months.

fh......cayenne pepper? i think i would be upping the sneezing.......?!..... :D
never tried that!

You're supposed to swallow it, not sniff it  :o   I understand but never had any problem with that.  I only sprinkle enough to lightly coat the honey (though I could handle a spoonful of cayenne itself :) )

"You're supposed to swallow it, not sniff it  :o"

..... :D, i actually googled recipes for lozenges with cayenne pepper in it, i found a recipe for cough syrup using cayenne pepper:
it's here:
HOMEMADE COUGH SYRUP

what the author says about using cayenne pepper:
"The cayenne pepper has capsaicin, which acts as a pain reliever. Even though it’s also what makes hot peppers spicy, capsaicin interrupts the pain message between the nerves and the brain, thus alleviating the pain sensation. It is warming and stimulating to the nerves, thus increasing blood flow and promoting healing."

also working on posting some recipes i have found for lozenges that i might have to try.

fh, how much honey do you use with the sprinkles of cayenne?

Yep I read that about the cayenne.  I just use a teaspoon full.  The honey keeps the pepper in the throat area longer to let it soak in.  Just don't drink any liquids right after the honey.
Off to read the recipe.
thanks

Buckley's cough syrup is quite a piece of work. It has something hot and I thought a bit of ammonia to clear your "scientists". Tastes bad but you dont have to take it for long is their punch line I think.

We make a syrup real similar to that.  Wife leaves it in a container on the counter and when you need some just grab a spoon.  Good stuff.

This thread is straining my memory.

At one time lozenges were made by hand in the pharmacy. The bulk of the lozenge was made with things like powdered glucose, starch or liquorice. The binding agent could be tragacanth or acacia gum. The active ingredients were added to the lozenge mass. The dough like mass was mixed well and rolled into a thin sheet. A die was used to cut out the lozenges which were then dried to harden.

A search of the library catalogue could produce an early copy of Martindale's Extra Pharmacopeia. This may give a guide to making lozenges.

Your granny may remember Chlorodyne lozenges, Bismuth Lozenges, Liqourice Lozenges or Phenol Lozenges.

denise1952- that looks doable.  I would want to add something to it.  Something that would help open up the sinuses.  I'm not sure about the cayenne that someone suggested.
I don't think one would want to stock pile this.  Maybe make enough for a month or two.  I can see it be a sticky mess as it sets for too long.

i have found a handful of recipes on the net for lozenges, these 2 include eucalyptus oil:

this one uses honey, an essential oil~*Thieves essential oil, lemon and eucalyptus.  the page has step by step instructions and the 'cook' used small silicone molds.

Homemade Honey, Thieves & Lemon Cough Drop Recipe

*Thieves essential oil
"Thieves Oil is a blend of five essential oils that are scientifically documented to be highly anti-infectious, antiviral, antibacterial, and antiseptic: Clove, lemon, cinnamon, Eucalyptus radiata and rosemary. "

another:
Homemade Cough Lozenges
