Chased burglars out of the house

right now I am very glad for my 350 lbs of dogs and small house that makes me look a bit poor.

 My neighbor only has one akita, nicest house in the neighborhood, burglar used the alarm service sign to knock out the big plate glass window and cleaned them out. they have photos on the camera system but getting police to call back or do anything that resembles investigation is always hmmmm delayed? 

I ran an arlington crime watch for a couple of years.

My home sits in the middle of 60 acres and is off the road by some 200 yards.  I fear my place is a good target for burglars, but I am comfortable where I live and will not allow criminals to move me.  We aren't home all the time and keeping a dog would be a pain, as I hate to ask neighbors and friends to check on a dog.

I do feel sorry for all of you that have suffered losses, and it appears that theft is on the rise across our nation.  It is probably the result of and ever increasing amount of drug use by our population.

Maybe I should put up a sign saying "owner is old and slow, but still a very good marksman."

2 of my neighbors have signs on their porches that say never mind the dog, beware of owner, with a photo of a revolver, but they are retired and home a lot. as much as I am gone when I work on site, the crooks would break in and go searching for the gun.  I do have a beware of dog sign on the front door, but I also have either a rottweiler or a shar pei/gsd mix with attitude inside that front door, at minimum, all the time.

Home break in's have slowed way down after the law was passed that if caught breaking and entering, your payed for. It has been used several times already, once by an elderly lady that blew a thief away with a shot gun  . The thief was breaking through her patio door. Before this law was passed, if you shot someone trying to break in your home, you had to drag them inside to showed they entered, not anymore . With Mo. being the meth capital of the US of A, i agree with this law. Being in public service jobs most of my life,i have seen unbelievable things they will do to get there meth . From what i've heard, once your on it, you can't get off it. . Jack

according to my local police station Missouri doesn't have the meth market cornered and for a while we had a trailer with people living in it who were dealing but I think that bunch got cleaned out.  When I moved here 15 years ago we had no crime

Security system has grown since then, and come indoors, they don't do much good in the backyard if a crook is coming in the front door

had little doggy biscuits and they all sat like that and phone was on the other side of the room, so off I go to get the phone and then get them to sit down again.  They are great dogs, great company and do a nice job of keeping unwelcome company away.  Today they will be lounging around the house by the fire, or surrounding my computer chair while I work. Kinda made getting a cup of tea difficult so their crates are in the office with cushions in them, and I have a path

barbarian your first post you mentioned 'young burglers'........teens? 

our country home, we have yet to experience anything but the local teens bashing the mail box off or shooting windows out in an outbuilding, and donuts on a 4 wheel in the gravel driveway after a rain......except for the young teen that mowed our lawn for a summer.....he decided (along with a brother) to put dead animals (squirrels) into our cistern. cha-ching.

our city residence, we have had attempted break ins through the front door, and deck door (off the side of the house), and thefts from the vehicles.
some of our neighbors have experienced the same. the doors, are dead locked with expensive locks. if you don't have dead locks or don't use them, it's easy to take a screwdriver and hammer and bust a door lock open.  most of these break ins or attempts were by teens, and one juvenile delinquent up the street when he's been released from whatever facility. can't prove it but i know he has been responsible for the thefts from the vehicles. i don't leave my jeep out too often in the city, having had end caps stolen off my aluminum tubes. these caps are not cheap.  i discovered that i could silicone them on; they screw into the end of the tubes, so have had no theft of these since using silicone, but thieves still try to get them off by prying which sometimes leaves a dent in the aluminum or scuff marks on the end caps.
mister rb has left his truck unlocked, and every time he does, it gets ransacked, and one time the idiots took the owners manual for the truck? 

we have considered cameras and had some bids, we may install them.  high quality deer cameras capture some great stuff in the driveway, or wherever on the property.  we do have a sign in the front window of the house near the front door, 'protected by' ...........and a fake camera, clearly visible...........   seems to keep the juvenile delinquents away. 

i pay attention to what's going on in my city neighborhood, i know when i see something out of the ordinary, activity, vehicles, people, and teens with their hats on backwards, pants sagging, driving up and down the street very slow (or walking) and checking out houses with binoculars........

also, a lot of times here adults are hiring young kids to do break ins.  if you have a garage door opener clipped to your visor, get rid of it, get it out of site.
