Had a chance to rummage through an old honey house that was abandoned for many years.  We came across this item and we are unsure what it is.  Who can help?

Isn't that a swarm catcher? Where you put that on the front of a hive about to swarm but it catches the queen which catches the swarm before they leave.

I have one of those from my wife's grandfather who kept bees in eastern North Carolina.

If That's A Swarm Catcher, I Want One! Would save me a bunch of hiking up and down a 10 foot slope all spring long  :D

Place it over the entrance. When the swarm comes out, the workers go through the excluder, but the queen can't. She will find her way up through the little cones. There she is trapped. Pick it up and the swarm will follow it. Place it on the entrance of an empty hive and slide the little sheet metal out from over the opening. She will go down and into the new hive.The workers will follow. When she has eggs and larva, remove it and they will stay.

Awesome description Iddee. I have 2 or 3 of those kicking around as well and never could figure out what they were for. I'll never use them, but interesting to know.

well actually REINVENTED in the current time frame as a swarm catcher.  before this they were use for capturing drones.  the common thread is neither drones nor queens can pass thru an excluder.  most of the old one of these I have seen also have small holes on the end with closures that will allow the drones to leave the hive.  flying drones are also the one that are sexually mature enough from which to catch semen.  if you are capturing semen you would like for the sexually mature drones to fly since they also relieve themselves when they fly and this allow you to capture semen without the drone poop.
