Here are some pictures of my oil pans on my hives which I find work very good for shb.

As you can see the small black bugs in the oil and this was just a week later that I change the oil in the pan.

How often do you need to change the oil?

I certainly change mine every spring and fall. Once in midsummer wouldent hurt anything. It can get pretty nasty. If it gets enough debris in it SHB may be able to escape from it. If I open a hive and see a few I know my oil needs changing.

I usually use about a quart in each pan. More would hold more debris before building a crust on top for the SHB to walk on.

I've read of people who filter it about once a week and reuse it. That would be fine if you just have a couple hives and lots of time on your hands or if that's what you want to do.

It's not for me though.

Thanks Lee.

I have seen Jamie from university of Florida in several other videos as well. This was good.

I had a few SHB in one hive about three years ago.  It was a weak hive.  Since then I have not seen a SHB in either of my apiaries.  It seems they are in weak hives at my place.  My bees are a bit hot and they may keep them out.  I don't know, but I do know it's not a problem for me.

I've switched from oil to soapy water, but will probably go back to the oil. I have to add more water every day, due to evaporation.

On the other hand, maybe the bees appreciate the water during these hot days of summer.
