Beetle traps
« on: July 14, 2016, 11:28:08 am »
I am using the long plastic traps that you put on top and between the frames and putting olive oil in them.

When I add a second brood box where should I put these traps and how many?

On top of the bottom brood box and the second brood box or what?

Ever on top of the honey supers that are above an excluder?

Thanks

I think when the numbers are low on the SHB, the bees tend to chase them towards the top.  If they overwhelm the bees, you could find them anywhere in the hive.  Given what I have seen and recommendations from some beekeepers I have heard giving presentations, I would keep them at the top of the hive, placing them between the #9 and #10 frames.  I like to put two on end to end.

However many it takes to control the shb numbers, spread evenly throughout the hive, including the honey supers.

We add vinegar with the oil. The sweet smell helps draw them in. Maybe it's a southern thing :D

Another good tip thanks

I tipped the tray and spilled some olive oil in between a couple of frames ..... Doubt that made them very happy!
