3+ miles from any bee hives including other nucs. But they still can be attacked by wasps, yellow jackets, hornets, ants, the list is endless. if it is to week and can,t defend it self it will be attacked by something. even wax moth's and small hive beetles. Make sure they have enough bees and a reduced entrance that they can protect.

Hmm, that's interesting... 3 miles. This is the first year I have been learning about nucs. I have 3 hives and 6 nucs in my back yard. I've been checking on the 6 nucs most every day, one a day, rotating them. So far I haven't seen any robbing... shrug

I've found robber screens helpful.

Don't have many, as when I'm putting Nuc boxes together, I make the entrance very small.  So when I need one, I just make it myself.  It is pretty easy.

Thanks everyone, I was afraid so.  I have a bunch of various weak ones made up to hatch queens out.  Trying to finish up this flow before strengthening up for winter or singles.  Kinda running short on good wintering places, especially for nucs.  I need to consolidate some various groups scattered around, once I pull some more honey off.

I didn't know better, so I keep NUCs right next to mature hives.

But they need a robbing screen, and I avoid feeding essential oils in the sugar water (syrup).  Iddee posted pictures of a simple robbing screen that is easy to make.  Anyone know where it is posted here?

Thanks Iddee!  I use your basic design, and now leave the top strip off.  Works like a charm.  :)

Thanks guys, I definitely need to build some robbing screens this weekend.  I have some for full size hives but not for nucs. I just know things can pretty hairy here in about a month.  Daggone mafia bees go native about that time. Lost a couple decent hives last October. Just worried about nucs.
