I take my 2 dogs in to the vet on a leash.

How many leashes will I need for my bees?

I was reading that and had the same thoughts. Why make it more difficult for beekeepers? A friend of mine also thinks that at some point we may all end up having to take a Pesticide Applicators License course in order to buy the "pesticides" we use to combat varroa.
Harder to get antibiotics? Wait for the inevitable outbreaks of things like AFB, etc.

Welcome to the nanny state.  We are reaping what we have sewed.  We voted for the government to take charge of our children, our roads, our social values, our reproductive rights and yada, yada, yada.  Certainly, the government in its all encompassing effort to do everything for us should take control of our bees.  Do any of you really think the average beekeeper can be trusted with, God forbid, antibiotics and such, "over the counter."

Rant over,

What it really means, is that many hobby beekeepers simply will NOT treat, if it means they have to call a vet...  Instead, their hives will die, and other bees will rob them out, killing them in turn from  EFB or even just Nosema.

Reminds me of when you use to be able to buy Rabies vaccine at the feed store for your dog for $5.00, Look what it cost now. :o While we are working making a living these groups get together with politicians and pass laws to make it mandatory that you have to go to a Veterinary,or ect,? so they can profit from it. Hey perry, i already had to get a pesticide Applicators License, and you have to renew it every 3 to 5 years. I can see the good and bad of these regulations, But they are a pain in the Butt, and costly.  Jack

Jack just mentioned "costly."  Every little extra thing you have to do in order to stay in business adds cost to the bottom line, or in other words, it shrinks your profit.  These regulations will not effect foreign imported honey.  They simply take from the profit of our domestic producers.  It is still more HELP from our nanny state government.

Veterinarian costs are expensive for my ranch operations.  Were I a large beekeeper, I don't think I could keep bees if I needed a vet very often.  It's also going to be a serious learning curve for veterinarians to learn to diagnose honey bee illnesses.

Scott, the bad thing is if someone sees and thinks your making money at something? They are going to try and get in on it Then it ruins it for everyone, and that opens the door for Exports to come in.I had a baby calf back in March that got sick and took it to the vet, had to leave it there for five days. In the mean time cattle prices went down and when i got the vet bill it was more than the calf was worth and it's not done very good since. I would have been better off to let it die money wise, but farmers don't do that. Jack

I know all the vets in my area. They are all good with cattle. A couple are good with dogs and cats. Only one knows goats pretty well. One is great with horses. I doubt if any knows honey bees. This could get interesting.

Know where your coming from all too well Jack...

Next time I see the local vet I will ask him if he has brushed up on BEE Surgery.. when he looks at me funny I will tell him about this...

The NICE thing about living in a small town, is that All I need to do is call him and he will get my prescription ordered...   I agree, anything to make money...

I have BUILT several houses.. I am talking from the poured foundation up..  wiring, plumbing, you name it.. Every one of those houses is still standing, and I expect them to be standing long after my kids are gone...      But.. NOW, you have to buy a permit to replace windows, or add a porch, or put in a new septic system....      Are those things not costly enough, without having to pay someone who has NOTHING to do with ANY PART of them for a permit?
Again, thats why I moved from Maine back here to the Midwest.. when I built THIS house.. I went to the code enforcement officer and asked what I needed for permits...  What were the regulations on wiring, plumbing, windows in the basement etc, etc...   He looked at me funny for a minute, then shook his head...   YOUR the one living in it, build it how you want. The only thing you need to do is have the wiring inspected...
The electrician checked grounds, made sure I had GFI outlets near the sinks and signed off......   Building this house was SO NICE and easy in comparison....  AND its built how I want it, not how the Gubmant thinks I need it.............   ok... done ranting......

big brother huh?  well sometime you need a big brother and you need not think the sky is falling at the first clap of thunder.

imho.... what you are seeing is a reaction to antibiotics showing up in honey samples.  many small beekeeper don't use the current equivalent of tm at all and as far as I can tell it is only really effective against efb.. with efb quite frequently cleaning itself up when a hives nutrition improves even with the use of tm.  as far as I know it only very temporarily suppress afb and at the end of the day I have concluded the best thing you can do if you see afb (and I have not seen a case outside a lab freezer in perhaps 30 years) is resolved with a shovel, a cup of diesel fuel and a match.  selecting for hygienic behavior is good 'genetic' insurance for both of these disease.

lots of migratory commercial kind of beekeepers do use tm and likely to some excess...which is why it is showing up in honey samples collect by the fda.  if you read the tm label carefully it is difficult to see how anyone with numbers of hives could possible apply the product EXACTLY as to the labels description (ie timing of multiple applications).   tm give the migratory folks some cover when they are inspect by state apiary inspectors and this is a concern since any flare up in disease beyond some small threshold will likely impede them moving bees across state line.  And who here is in favor of that... that is willy nilly moving large numbers of diseased bees here and there?  Personally since I am a set down beekeeper I do want the state apiary inspector to monitor shipment of bees and halt their movement when they are known to carry certain kinds of diseases.

and ps... I have reared here a new beekeeping friend who is also a vet pathologist.  works for a company that does vet type pathology on a national scale and to my understanding a lot of his work is done with digital photography.  I would therefore suspect with a photo and a lab sample even the migratory set should be able to still obtain tm.  my GUESS is.... No vet who values his license will likely want to wager their licenses for some small $ amount received from a beekeeper. Would you?

When they came for my neighbor, I remained quiet.

Bees are probably less than 1% of the animal and livestock antibiotics are used on. The cattlemen, swine producers, chicken farmers, etc. etc. etc. They are the ones who will see the robbing and raping of the farmer with this law.

Build a bigger mouse trap you get a smarter mouse.

I believe that if we as beeks suspect AFB we will burn it down and start over with some bees from another beek before we go get the vet. Not only that, but beeks will share their antibiotics with other beeks before hauling in the vet.

Then, like Perry said, there will be those who will neglect AFB which will spread and many backyard beeks will just let  their hives go, like Scott said. I do believe many beeks will just back out of the beekeeping world all together.

Such a shame

Still can get dog, rabies, distemper, parvo, etc. shots here in Arizona with syringes at the Tractor Supply Store or Vet without prescription, but that said this whole deal is linked to someone lobbying to get this done in government to make themselves money I think also. Man government is so greedy that actual health, welfare, or anything else is non important and anything easy or good for farmers or beekeepers needs taxed or regulated despite the damage done...
Cheers, Bill
