I dislike Florida
« on: September 18, 2016, 01:52:54 pm »
Got my sister moved into her new home in Tampa.  Exhausted from 25 hours of driving and unpacking.  Finally got to use the pool and jumped in thinking relief from this blasted humidity and heat.  Splash! No relief,  the pool was 88 degrees!  Give me an Adirondack lake any day! Drove to Miami to visit Ken's son. Hot, hot and more hot!  You sweat in the garages, you sweat in the elevators, can't eat outdoors cause you sweat.  Heading north now, stopping in Daytona on to St Simon's Island, then Myrtle Beach maybe Williamsburg and then Cape May, NJ ...... Anywhere that it is cooler!  ❄️❄️❄️  :\'(

You're welcome to stop in here anytime. If it's another couple of months be sure to bring a shovel.

My world is hot and dry.  I like it.  I can usually take off enough clothes to survive, but it is sometimes impossible to put enough clothes on to stay warm.  still, I understand your aversion to Florida heat.  Their humidity is a killer.

I just saw on the Weather Channel that Gainsville and the area set the record for lightening strikes in the U.S.   Warm air coming in from both coasts then going upward create some unique weather patterns.   :o

Les,

I definitely hear you. I grew up in New Orleans and didn't have A/C until I moved out on my own. Soon discovered I hated A/C. I worked outdoors and walking into a cold house would make me ill. The humidity gets so ridiculous that you have to sponge mop the linoleum twice a day and all the windows are constantly damp. I've lived here in the hills for 32 years and I found now that I'm locally adapted. This has been a very "humid" summer-generally in the 60s. That would be a dry day in New Orleans, but I'm still miserable.
Whoever coined the phrase," It's not the heat it's the humidity.", was right on!

My only trip to Homestead Air Force Base in Florida was in winter.  Miami is warm in winter!

I attended a water survival school there where the final test was to don a parachute and be towed up 500+ feet and disconnect the tow line on que (I was high enough to see Biscayne Bay and the beginning of the keys).  On the way down, you removed your oxygen mask and inflated your mae west floatation device after you hit the water, then disconnected the parachute and inflated your survival dingy and waited for rescue by helicopter.  There I was, in my own piece of heaven...floating shark bait, but  the water was warm in January!!

Coming from Montana, the big shocker was the green grass...Try a visit in late January and you are bound to have a different experience in Florida Les.   :)

After a significant amount of time in Afghanistan I can say with certainty that I do not like heat past 25c (also known as 82f ish)  I much prefer the weather here or at least the weather here April to December lol.

I have been all around Florida (following my Sister and my Mom) at many different times of year.  Doesn't matter what time of year or the location, it just feels "unnatural" to me.  Guess I'm just a gal that likes to be near the mountains.  I don't mind the cold (except maybe Perry's cold).

One can only imagine living in Afghanistan AND wearing personal protective gear in 50 C heat.  Thanks you for your service!  :)

what lee said, 'thanks for your service'..........had friends serve in afgahanistan and other places, the heat stories carrying the gear, and other unpleasantries......can't imagine!

and lee, the humble guy he is........thank you for your service........ ;D

les, i grew up in western montana, the mountains. not so much cold there, but we could get buried in snow.  i don't mind cold and snow, just as long as it isn't below zero and the snow isn't piled above the waist...........wisconsin and minnesota can get bitter cold, i have never liked it.  and i have never really adjusted to the humidty during summer months either.  i can take the heat. add humidity?...........then riverbee is probably looking for shade and a tall glass of ice tea.......err maybe cocktail........ :D and thinking on moving elsewhere...... :D

I love, love, love Montana, but I have never been there in the heart of winter.  I have worked in Wyoming in the winter.  I don't think I would do well in long periods of deep snow and sub-zero temperatures.  There's just too much Texas in my blood.  I've been really cold in Texas, but not for days on end.  Florida is the other side of the world.  My workmen have more danger of heat stroke and heat exhaustion along the gulf coast at 90 degree temperatures than working in West Texas when it is 110 degrees.  I've worked many a day on the coastal plains when haze (humidity) hung in the air all day long.  Florida can be, and is, miserably hot for a few months in the summer, but they do have really nice winters.  I bet the Florida beekeepers don't need over 20 pounds of honey stores for their winters.  Florida heat is akin to what our soldiers suffered in Viet Nam.  Like Afghanistan, it would be miserable clothed for combat.

A long time ago, decades back, I spent some time in Pakistan, and it too was hot and miserable with ugly mountains, but that's a story I can't tell.  Thanks to Barry and Lee for their service, and thanks to Lee for just being lee and helping with my bees.

Lazy,
We now live in Victoria, which is close enough to the coast to have high humidity, but far enough away to miss out on the constant sea breeze.

When we lived in Aransas Pass we were less than a mile from the bays. That sea breeze really makes a difference in being able to tolerate the heat and humidity.
