Insect cruelty
« on: September 17, 2016, 01:46:02 pm »
I was at a fountain pen event (another hobby) last night and one of the other hobbiests was a biology student close to graduation. The bee conversation turned to other critters, including ants. He told us about research on ants finding their way home.  Apparently ants count their steps. To discover this, researchers first put the ants on stilts. The ants over-shot home by a wide margin, and got lost.

The next phase of research was to "shorten" their legs.

This raised several questions in my mind:

What kind of lumber would you use to build stilts for ants?
Would people pay to watch ants on stilts? What if they were wearing clown costumes?
What kind of saw would you use to cut off an ants legs?
Who would be that cruel? Was the mob involved?

I often hang out with people in jails, prisons, on parole or on probation.

Maybe that's a problem?

Hmmm CBT, if that's the case... I like that Wman is a beekeeper and on this forum... lots of family here.

I was thinking maybe a guard, counselor, doc or nurse...

Well, In my other life I'm a forensic psychologist who works with sex offenders.

I'm also the director of the forensic psychology MA program at The University of Houston - Victoria.

I'm leaving UHV in January to spend more time with Wife and bees ... in that order!

Wman, my veil is off to you my friend. Wishing you a truly wonderful retirement, where the bees will never fail to entertain you, and the wife will tend to your stings  ;) 8)

K, so I was imagining someone using a microscope to stitch and feet back on shortened ant legs...
THAT would give a surgeon some practice...  then maybe I wouldnt have to have the massive steel staples next time I have surgery.
