When I was in the Army in San Francisco, the colonel I worked for told me that during the Nam war and for years afterwards, he would wear civilian clothing when he went to work and when he went home at the end of the day.  He said people would curse him and throw things at him when he wore his army duds.  He lived in Mill Valley just north of SF
