Made in France.  What was it used for.? ?

Found in the woods, no old home place that's known to be around.  Might just have been trash thrown out. Was just curious with such a hinge type lid . was there a product in jar or was it the first canning jars ? ?

They are ornamental jars. They are still made and sold today.
