How high up the trunk, and how long in inches is that opening?

2 ft off ground in a split red oak. The crack is prob 12" long. Looks like a second hole of 1/2" down about 8 inches below crack. One of the splits is a dead trunk  about 20' tall. Could possibly do a cut out. Farmer didn't care just wanted the wood .

A cut out seems like an awful lot of work, I'd be tempted to do a trap out, especially where it is at such an easy height.

True but I don't even have bees yet. So need to get frames with eggs as Iddee says to do a trapout, so gonna be just a tad bit before I can do it.

Understood. If you can find a friend that could help you out with even just a frame with eggs it could make the difference for ya.

Agreed, but right now with weather like it is, they are better where they are. Only reason I was thinking of cut out was to hopefully get the queen and plus I never did one and the thought of a chain saw, mixed with bees would be wonderful learning experience. Will see how this all pans out.

Ahhh, OK......................sure thing! :o :D

Whichever method you decide to go with, wait until warm weather arrives before you tackle it.
