sting potency?
« on: April 04, 2017, 05:35:59 pm »
Ran into a thread on "another site", in which the idea that some strains of honey bees have a more potent, painful sting. My understanding is that the venom of a bee's sting gets more potent with age but I have never heard of a strain of bees with a more painful sting. I know certain places on the body hurt more but this is news to me. Those of us with more experience please weigh in?

Yep! All stings hurt!  ;)

However, when I sting myself for arthritis, I can sure tell the sting of a young bee more than an old bee. Much more wallup with a young bee. I think they can drill that stinger in better too  :D

I was taught in Honey Bee biology that the venom is at peak potency when the worker is 18-21 days old. That is also when they shift into guard duty.

Yeah, the "other site", sorry Perry didn't mean to seem disloyal.  :\'(
