Making my own MegaBee winter patties
« on: February 09, 2014, 12:16:55 pm »
I think my measurements are right, but two batches have come out runny.

MegaBee patty intructions:

Mix 1 part powder by weight + 1.7 parts heavy syrup. Let soak overnight and make into patty.

My measurements are: Add 1 cup MegaBee powder 1 3/4 heavy syrup. This makes about 1 winter patty that I would buy from B and B Honey Farms.

Solution didn't set up, twice, pretty runny

Is my equation right according to MegaBee

Not sure here I have never mixed mega bee. But will take a stab at it.  The directions call out for measurement by weight and you are measuring by volume. This may be the problem

Minnie- What I need is for the measurements to be converted into cook book style.

If it is an issue of wright to volume being the problem I would get a small set of digital scales. They are handi to have around I use a  digital scale when making soaps and lip balm they are cheap on ebay.

jen, here is the mixing instructions:
Mega Bee Mixing Instructions
and a pdf file with tips:
Mixing Tips

says:
PATTY
"Prepare MegaBee patties with a heavy syrup, i.e. fructose corn syrup, 50/50 blend or heavy sucrose syrup (2:1 or greater). For soft, moist patties follow the measurements in the chart below. If firmer patties are preferred, reduce the amount of liquid syrup to 1.5 lbs. of liquid per 1 pound of MegaBee."

according the the chart, 1 pound of mega bee to 2 1/3 cups liquid. (2:1 sugar syrup or greater)

4 Cups of MegaBee powder weighs- 1 pound
2 Cups of MegaBee powder weighs- 1/2 pound
1 Cup of MegaBee powder weighs- 1/4 pound
Mix 4 cups at once and your 1 3/4 cup syrup will be about right.
Mix 1 cup with a bit less than 1/4 cup syrup.

The stuff you have made, just add 3 cups megabee to each batch and remix.

Adding the directions to the bag, will just make it more expensive to purchase.
"Google" is your best friend. They have the directions on the 40 lb bag.
My bees love that stuff.

Well I don't want to appear internet ignorant, I'm good at researching the web. But it did frustrate me to not be able to find 'the page' in the megabee website, that Riverbee found for me. Bless her honey heart  :D

aw jen, beekeeping companies think all us beekeepers are walking encyclopedias for instructions........ :D

just kidding girl, since when have you purchased anything from anywhere that you didn't have to download instructions from the net, saving paper? not sure how they think we are all saving paper, cuz we just print it off........ :D

hey, post back and let us know how your mix turned out, how it finally worked out for you.   :)

Riv- This winter, you ought to see the three piles of printed bee info I have. I am wading thru it tho.

I added another cup to my loose recipe, it's more like Adams peanut butter texture now, don't think it will drip off of the wax paper. It's in the hive. Weather is up into the 50's next week, I'll take a peek. Bees are going thru the patties every two weeks.

I'll update for sure

Jen, Dr. Wardell is very good about answering questions on his product.
You can just shoot him an e-mail and they will respond back.
On the stacks of paper, I had stacks that were falling over and mixed up half the time.
Purchasing a few flash drives to keep my beekeeping articles on, saved the day for me!

After looking in the drawer, seems I have a whole hand full of those flash drives with bee stuff on them. How could a person collect so much stuff?  :o
I'll have to edit some of it off. No person in their right mind could ever utilize that much info.

I have to admit that my desk is full of papers, but I've been pretty good at keeping my favorite bee stuff on a flashdrive. I have some more to put on now that I've learned so much this winter on this forum. This is partly because my dear ole laptop is on it's last leg so I'm in the process of emptying it. Ugh

The wife bought us new equipment this year. An ipad for her and a surface for me. I'm still trying to adjust to the smaller screen and not having any fun. Thought I'd better get to using it if I ever wanted anything new in the future.
She said it was time to clean up all this clutter around here. Hence, getting rid of all that paper and downloading most stuff to electronic storage. Thank God I have a great wife that puts up with me.

She still doesn't know about all those bee magazines from the forties and fifties I've collected.
I'm hiding them in the attic. I do have a good selection of books too, but they look nice and tidy in the book shelves.
