It sounds like the girls learned a lot!  I like the phrase "every effort counts".
In this part of the country there has been an effort to educate people on leaving bare spots of ground for ground nesting bees, leaving last years sticks and stems up in place until April 1 for the eggs laid in stems, and not raking leaves for the many insects and butterflies that have over wintered in the debris.
