I'm thinking mason bee as well, but I'm not sure. It would be the darker strips that may lead me that way. If it is a mason bee, they are lovely agreeable bees.

hard to say mama, like apis, possibly a mason bee. wish omie were here.  mason bees are similar in appearance to honey bees but are smaller and darker than the honey bee.  they do emerge in the spring.

are they the same size as your honey bees or are they smaller. Yours are 1/4" wide X 1/2" long the first 2 pictures they looked small these new pictures they appear to be larger.

I don't believe there is any "correct" or "best" way to place swarm traps.

I think cavity size and baiting with old comb are most important,  all the rest is minor.   I know old comb is always a challenge for new beekeepers,  so if you don't have a local beek who is willing to give you some, just remember:

Any swarm trap has a better chance of catching a swarm than no swarm trap.

Here is my experience with swarm traps -> http://beevac.com/swarm-traps/
