Bee Club Auction
« on: March 15, 2014, 10:09:39 pm »
Had our yearly club auction today, my 86 year old beekeeper buddy started beekeeping in heaven last year and his sons had three trailer loads of his bee equipment there. Howard made most of his equipment and some of it was ahead of it's time, i bought some things that had sentimental value to me and his boys said they would have given them to me if they knew i wanted them. (good boys) About 30 med. supers with drawn comb that never had brood in them, only honey that he extracted from sold for $28.00 ea. and the paint was almost gone on most of them, i couldn't believe it. :o 20 cases of quart Kerr jars (new never been opened cases) sold for ten dollars a case and howard had told me he bought them for $5.00 a case a few years ago at a discount store. Most items brought top dollar, i gave some things to the club to sell for the club and several people sold things they didn't use anymore or had more than they needed. There was over a hundred members there buying and all in all everyone had a good time. I hope Howard was watching. Jack

Great idea and way to recycle the equipment that is not being used any more.

What Perry said.  One of my old pals had a beekeeping pal.  The death of the beekeeping pal is what got me into beekeeping.  It's kind of like passing the baton in a relay race.

The auction is a regular event in my club's programme. It is held every two years. The last auction {2013) had over 300 lots.

The seller's and buyer's premiums cover the staging costs and provide a boost to the club's funds.

It's nice that Howard's sons donated the items to the club.  I take it they didn't share his enthusiasm for beekeeping.

They didn't donate all of it, the auction brought over $3,000.00 and the club got over $500.00. Howard at one time did use Duragilt foundation (plastic held together by a metal frame :D) there was a whole big box of it with several unopened boxes of it. :o The next day after the auction one of Howards sons called me and said they found two unopened thin comb honey foundation and ask if i wanted it, i went and got it and tried to pay them for it, but they wouldn't hear of it. ??? Tomorrow, (Thursday) they are going to have an auction at his house, they have sold his house and have to have everthing out by April 15,2014. Howard was a sheet metal worker, and heating and air most of his life, and he didn't throw anything way, that auctioneer co. is going to earn there money cleaning out all those sheds and storage buildings. Don't know if i'll go or not, don't seem right going over there without seeing Howard. Jack

my dad was a welder and a carpenter, he didn't throw anything away and he has alzheimer's so that didn't and hasn't helped the situation; family looking at the same. his shop, which is a converted barn with an upper level, you can't barely squeeze through the door to get in......upstairs.....hmm we are all looking for the key, and that hasn't had any visitors for some time.... :D

wander on over there jack, doesn't seem right, but it will be okay..... ;)

If I was the person who's property is being dispersed, I think I would want a few friendly faces around not just a bunch of strangers looking for a bargain.  Those kind of things are like visitations, you see a bunch of people who haven't seen in years and it gives you a chance to catch up.  I always think the deceased is up there smiling down on us.

Well, i went to the sale and Howards brother was there, kind of scary, he walked up behind me and tapped me on the shoulder :o. Bob and Howard look almost alike except Bobs a little younger. Bob talked me into buying one of Howards DeWalt 10 in. table saw, i couldn't let it go and ended up paying $47.00 for it (that's why i bought it) i have two 10 in. table saws and i think i can set them up to make frames without having to make different set ups. There was 10 buildings full of just about anything you could think of, plus the household furniture.the auctioneer was selling it by the boxes full. There was over 120 buyers and they got some bargains, there was a commercial Brake that i would have liked to have, but the only thing i would have used it for is making hive lids and i have enough things i have to walk around now. I'm glad i went i had a good visit with Bob and Howards son. Jack
