"My wife came home today and told me she just bought out one of the beekeepers that lost all of his hives over the winter. 12 frame Dadant extractor, two de capping tanks, two stainless honey storage tanks, smokers, suits, 30 plus hives, etc, etc..  So when I make reference to how mean she is, just consider the source of the information as being full of poo."

   I worked 20 + years as a mechanic. Was part owner in a performance shop and a full time gunsmith. At times working three jobs to keep her on the road to her degree's..  coming home in the evening to eat, see her for a few moments, then drive off to the next job...
    She received her masters in Science for health and safety, and has a job making more than we both used to make working three jobs. She told me that she would like it if I stayed home and took care of everything so she didnt have to worry about it when SHE got home...   So buddy.. I jumped all over that. 
   Unfortunately she often decides I need something to do and buys a house for me to rebuild and sell, or a green broke horse, or has a load of railroad ties brought in for flower beds or steps etc....
    I often threaten her that I am going to get a real job so I don't have to work so hard.... then she goes and does something like buying all that equipment....
  I can't keep telling everyone how MEAN she is if she goes and does something nice like that    :(

Scott-  Bravo! It takes a true man to admit to that. She's very lucky to have you as well. It may not seem like it at times, nothing easy about marriage, it's the hardest job I ever had, even over raising children. But between the two of us, 38 years, we have accomplished a lot of good things together

Our biggest problem is that she likes watching what I call her.. "Murder Death Kill"  shows..   kind of makes a man nervous when shes yelling at some woman on TV that just killed her husband telling her what she did wrong........     

   So far, this stuff she bought looks good. Several boxes of unused wax foundation, 30 plus complete hives. A 50 gallon stainless honey tank and a 20 gallon stainless honey tank. Two stainless decapping tanks. a 12 frame Dadant extractor....

   The extractor is nice...  but... comparing it to the old beast I have it seems so....  flimsy? The old stuff will spoil you for rugged durability.

  There are a lot of shallow supers in this stuff...  not sure what to do with them..  I suppose I will stack them just in case, but..  I prefer not to even have them at hand, because I KNOW I will use them...  The deeps.. I can cut down, but those too will get used if the poo hits the fan, then I will have a mess..  I may stack all of the non standard stuff, shallows and deeps up at the store to keep them out of handy reach.   A deep isn't bad if I put it on the bottom board, because next spring I can rotate it out completely. Still causes a headache if I need just ONE MORE frame of brood for a split....

   Once I get all of this stuff organized I'll post some pictures. I will probably sell some of it to try to make a little of the money she spent back.

If there is any of it you can't use yourself, clean it up and sell it. 

As far as wives go Scott, I have one very similar to yours. I quit my full time job about 7 years ago, and have been a stay-at-home Dad since then. I pick up jobs as  need be (like driving blueberry express bus), a few small renovation jobs helping a friend, doing bee inspections, etc. I have also depleted a lot of my "retirement" savings during this time, knowing when I hit 55 I would start a small pension. Through it all, my wife has been the primary bread-winner in our family, allowing me the freedom to raise our son, tend my bees, and do some volunteering. I will never be able to adequately enough express my love to her for her sacrifice
I do hope however, to be able to expand my efforts with my beekeeping passion to be able to contribute financially in a more sustainable way. Last year I took the first step in that direction.

I would faint if my wife bought a bunch of bee stuff.  I am trying my darndest to talk her into keeping a few hens for eggs this spring...she is not having it at all right now.  She thinks I have enough to take care of.  I told her I was increasing my yard to 30 colonies this spring as a goal.  I think she may want chickens soon...

Lazy, those shallows make good feeder boxes and that's as far as they get with me.
You can cut them down into 2 inch feeder rims also
Sell them as quick as possible so you don't get tempted!
Bee club people love that stuff!

Don't want to be a party pooper, but i would want to know why he lost all of his bees?? Disease, mites, froze, ect. Don't know how many hives you already have? and you add 30 more, well when you get over 30 hives it starts to become a full time job , and with all the other jobs she finds for you, you won't have time to set in the shad with a cool one  I couldn't live that way. That's why i made it clear i'm the King and this is my Castle. Got to go now and see if she's planting the onions the way i told her. Jack

Hey! I AM the king of this castle!!!!   I know that for a fact because my wife said I could be the King!!   She does remind me often that no King is truly great without the queen who stands behind him.   

   His bees Starved this winter Jack. Two hives made it, and they will be coming down to one of my outyards, the rest of the equipment I will have to inspect and clean. With the loss he just gave up and walked away from it all.  I looked it all over last weekend...  heartbreaking to open all those hives.
   I put honey frames from the other hives on the two survivors.  Like most deadouts I have seen, and having seen what my bees did I knew what to expect. They chimneyed straight up without moving to the sides. When they reached the top, thats where they died. Every single one of them.

Jen, this coming June the fith we will be celebrating our 55th and i'm still upright i think i can say what ever i want. When that short timer iddee gets to his 55th he'll see what i mean . Besides my wife never  reads this forum. Jack
