Club VP, now what?
« on: April 09, 2014, 01:10:13 pm »
This past weekend I went from Bee club member to VP.
I think we have a good President, we definitely have good membership.

One thing that we have spoken about is having non-meeting get-togethers.  Something to build the community apart from the monthly business meetings.

Any suggestions?
I'm starting to think that the bees are keeping me...

We have a field day one month a year on a weekend. Club grills hamburgers, hotdogs, and supplies trimmings. ""Buns, mustard, slaw, lettuce, etc. Members bring covered dish. Side dish, dessert, etc. We have a open hive demo, smoker lighting, yard games, etc.

The club closest to me only has 4 meetings a year..   I think that would be fine, IF they had some way for members to stay in touch.. but they "barely" have a web page that has not been updated in quite a long time.
   What I wish for?
Well, basically.. I would set up a private forum for members only..   AND direct them to THIS forum for information beyond THAT forum with their questions.
More get togethers.. maybe not every month, lets say every OTHER month, and they could alternate between formal and informal. Inviting/advertising the informal meetings to newbeeks for a cookout to ask questions etc..
No one wants to be overwhelmed with duties and responsibilities, but it is nice to be able to get together to ask questions, hear news, buy nuc's/packages/queens/equipment, etc, etc..  The best information usually comes from people nearby on how to keep bees in your area. Knowing the other local beekeepers also gives you options in case you run into trouble..  There is no better way to become friends with those other beeks than the informal outings.

Don't get overwhelmed by it all Keith (or should I say fellow Vice-President).  ;)
Since I have become Vice-Pres I have probably had 50 emails, trying to set up video-conferencing, etc. and you will be surprised at how much free time gets burned up. I would love to have a bee "club" that didn't have many of the responsibilities our Provincial Association does, but that would only add to my responsibilities.
Pot luck meetings sound like a good and easy way to spread out the workload.

You will make a fine VP Keith.  I like what Iddee's group does.  I have not joined any groups near me but have formed a small group of keepers locally.  We are planning on having a day out at my house to make Coates nucs and at the end of the day, a large bbq.  One of the guys's brother caters with one of those large pull behind smokers.  We may have a field day also.

We already have a spring and fall banquet, monthly meetings, plus now I'll have executive board meetings. I don't want to burn out on bees by biting off more than I can chew.
maybe a scaled down version of a field day.
kinda like , "Hey guys, I've got beer on ice. Lets look through some hives then cool down in the shade and talk about what we've seen."

Oddly enough starting my third year, people seem to think I know what I'm doing.  If they only knew!

You seem pretty knowledgeable to me. Anyone who asks questions when they dont know an answer is ten steps ahead of the average crowd.
