Asked to speak at the local library about honey bees
« on: April 22, 2014, 10:36:06 am »
The local book club has asked me to talk about honey bees this coming Thursday night.  Their book for this month is "Murder by Honey Bee." or something similar.  I don't know selects the book they read each month but I think I'll suggest voting in someone else!

I plan on carrying the bee gum made from an old hollow poplar cut in 1910, (my wife's great, great granddaddy's bee hive), her father's bee hive from the 1950's, and one my own.  They have been advertising on our local radio station and their Facebook site. Once I heard the ad I told the librarian who invited me my fee changed from 0 to $10,000. She just laughed.

I was serious. Not!  Really looking forward to the meal afterward, which is my pay.

Well done. I am doing the same thing in July, I may pick your brain for ideas.

I like talking in situations like that..  I usually start by asking for questions about honeybees, and let the conversation flow..  if it dies THEN I start pointing to the stuff I brought for show and tell..   I have ended up talking about everything from making hives to how much better local honey is than that stuff from other states.  :P

Had a good time with the book club last night. Very interesting questions and genuine concern for the plight of honey bees. They gave me $25 gift card to a local steak house and prepared a delicious supper that everyone enjoyed. Here's one of my favorite food items they prepared.

Bravo Wayne.  Very good.  And, the cake and gift certificate was, I am sure unexpected.  What a blessing and I am sure humbling to say the least.

Scott, good pointers for leading discussion for sure.

Good on you Bama.  My wife and I went on a county agricultural tour yesterday.  The county agricultural agent loaded us on a bus and took us to visit a dairy and a pecan orchard.  While riding on the bus he spoke about agriculture in our county in generalities.  He told us how many people were employed and the economic impact agriculture has on county.  (our county grosses 330,000,000 dollars from agriculture)  When we arrived at each stop the owners of the ag business addressed us.  It was a very educational trip for this old engineer.

Were I in your position, I would tell of the wonders of pollination and how it effects agriculture and horticulture in general, spend some time on the benefits of local honey on allergies, and you can always fall back on the plight of the honey bee against the varroa mite.  You're going to do well and your real reward will be seeing the appreciation of your audience.  Go get 'em Bama………..
