2nd Street Cut Out Scouting Photos and Video
« on: May 10, 2014, 08:21:27 pm »
I was asked by the homeowner to remove a colony from his house.  The entrance was very busy when I visited.  I took some photos and a video.  Where do you all think the colony is just by looking at the pics and video?  I am thinking a 50% chance they are travelling up the eave of the porch roof and 40% chance they are in the wall between studs and 10% chance they are inside the dead space of the porch roof.

Looking at the cut out I have to do Tuesday.. today..   The bees are entering through a hole in an old board.. I expected them to be nearby...  they are going through the hole, then flying inside the barn to the wooden gran bin about three feet from the hole in the outside wall...
So I am not even going to try to guess which direction they are going after they go in...
So Lets see who can do the best Vid of their Cut out Blue!!    ;D

Those aren't too badly priced Iddee. I wish I could use the one the fire department uses.

I have one from Harbor Freight, 29.95, and it works quite well.

I love Harbor Freight.  Have two of them within 20 minutes.  Questions:  So, just point that sucker at the wall?  Any common temperature for bees?  Or, will the temperature just rise by a certain amount of degrees?  Also, is it best to do this in the evening when temps are cooler?

The brood area will be 3 or 4 degrees warmer than the other areas. Do it when the sun is not directly on the area. Just point the laser and slowly move it around until you get an area warmer than the other areas. You will be able to pick out the brood nest. It will be simpler than you are thinking it will be.

Thanks Iddee!  I will have to pick one of these up then.  I could see using it for other things also.  Shoot, the guys that cook maple syrup could use it I suppose to keep tabs on the temp.

Got mine from homecheapo, "General" brand and I think it was $40 at the time, only thing I could find locally, but that was a couple of years ago.

Just wondering,  how do you think it would work using a medical stethoscope?   Would feeling around and listening at the surface of the wall let you hear them buzzing louder as you get closer to the center of activity?  In the days when I was a farm mechanic we would sometimes isolate the faults in a motor by placing a large, long screwdriver at different areas of the block and by placing the handle against our ears, could detect where a knock came from.
I have no idea how the cost of a stethoscope compares to that of an infra-red thermometer, but, who knows?   :-\

Used to have tech school hires look at me like I was an idiot when I did that Ef..
I have a stethascope, and have attempted to use it..  It WILL get you into a general area, but is not very specific..  could be my ears are not as good as they once were either.

Made a trip to Harbor Freight this evening and picked up some toys.  The thermometer was on sale for $35.99 from $59.99.  I have been wanting a dado kit for a long time too.  It was on sale too, $34.99.  I am discovering it is essential for making your own hive equipment.  Iddee was right about some of my butt joints moving after winter. I will be transitioning from butt joints with Kregs screws to rabbet joinery.   I had been running the pieces over and over again and moving the fence to get my width everything and running the board two ways to get the frame rest which would be terribly inaccurate.

I inspected the house a little more today and I am more and more certain they are in the eaves.  The hive was sprayed a year or two ago.  Which was obviously a failure.  I am breaking it open this Thursday.  Scott, I will take ya up on your offer for the best removal vid for a little friendly competition.  :P
