I looked in the hives today just to see if they'd started making honey yet.  I have one 8-frame medium super completely full of honey!!!  That's around 50-60 pounds!  It had all drawn comb to start with.  I put another super on top of that with bare frames.  Hopefully they'll build the comb and fill it up while the flow is on.

The other hive didn't have drawn comb, so they're making comb in those frames, although there is some honey there.  They're a little behind but doing well.  I'm very optimistic and hoping for a good year.

Awesome! I am seeing this trend all over.  I am excited.  It was a wet year in 2013 so there should be lots of nectar this year.

Congrats Slow. Maybe consider moving a few frames of foundation down and a few drawn and filled frames up in your honey supers to entice them to draw them out quicker.

Thats great!  A few more days before I check my supers.  I agree with Perry.. swap some empty and filled frames.. drives them bonkers not to be organized!

I really didn't have time to do that yesterday.  I just threw another super with empty frames on top.  I am considering swapping frames like you recommend if I get a chance.

Greg, you know I'm a newbie, but I'll echo what the others have said...move a frame of honey up...it seems to work for me!

Sure glad your bees are hard at work making honey, mine don't want to make comb to put honey in, just enough to raise brood it looks like and honey and pollen for them.

I have never used a queen excluder.  I got a couple this year just to have some if the need ever arises.

 I don't generally use an excluder, but have a few JUST in case..   I have the old ZINC flat stamped excluders from my mentor that MAY have been used once or twice in all the years he owned them, along with a few newer ones, the welded wire type, most of which have never been on a hive..

   Finding you NEED an excluder and don't have one is a real pain..
    Might be because you want to use it as an "includer" or because you really do need to keep that queen with a desire to wander out of the supers..  Always good to have!
