More swarms and trapout and swarm trap
« on: May 22, 2014, 10:52:27 pm »
setting up a trap out on a school yard.

While setting up trap out I got a call for a swarm and it was on my way home.

And got a call that a nuc box I had hung buy a tree that we are going to a trap out of. I thought they might swarm. Looks like I called it right. ;D

This is this years growth, we have 2 trap outs, a cut out and a swarm trap to add to this.  I am out of stuff and waiting on UPS truck.

I came out of winter with 17 doubles deeps.

I also made and sold 10 nucs that are not in the picture.

I have 4 more to bring home this weekend to add to those 16.

My 17 overwintered double deeps are currently filling supers. And filling them very, very fast.

I think I am sitting at about 37 right now. :o

Yea, no kidding, huh?

I was building everything but the frames. I currently am building all my own bottom boards, inner covers and tops. I just started buying my boxes but may go back to building them when I have time.

I've been buying the BUDGET boxes from mann lake. Not really bad, a few knots but nothing I cant live with for the money and time savings. I think the deeps are 12 something and supers are 9 something if you buy 5 at a time, over 100 bucks free shipping.

Yeap, Mannlake is a good deal.  I need more deeps and some other things I don't have time to make right now.  My homework reveals this about deeps considering you need 74" of 1x pine to comfortably build one deep.  So, you will have to buy an 8' board because 6' is too short and they don't sell 7' boards.  The longer the board, the cheaper but even a 12' board will be too short by nearly 4".

I checked a couple big box stores online locally and this is what I found for 1x8-8 pine boards:
-Menards: $11.39
-Home D:  $15.57!!
-Lowes  :  their pricing box is goofy and broken...all the time..you have to go in to check price

Now,
Mannlake budget box for quantity of 5-35 is $12.95.  The difference is $1.56 from Menards.  That is so minute that my time is worth more than that....conclusion is that I will order my next bunch of boxes.

Yea Blue, I came up arounf the same numbers. I can get the boards at a locale building supply for around 10 bucks. Forget Lowes or Home Depot.

But right now there is just no way I have time to build. No way. No way, No way. I may go back to building them in the winter. My sticking point was always
the hand holds, but I bought me one of those molding cutters for the table saw. I will try some this winter. But, it is really nice to out in the garage and grab the boards, a little glue, nails and paint and done.

My neighbor goes and works in OK about once a month and we found a bee place that sells deeps for 10.95 each. I cant pass those up.

Is the Menards here that much different?  Last two times I went up it was 5.99 for a 12' 1 x 8 out of the "standard" bin. Have to sort through a few but I have always found decent boards.  They measure  a wee bit better than an inch longer than 12'  If I dont screw up a cut I can get two medium boxes per board. If I dont have the extra inch to work with, or the end of the board is not square I lose one short side board, but usually end up with two boxes at a cost of $3.00 each plus paint of course.

I stand corrected.. regular price is 5.69 they are currently on sale for 5.44
