Caught 'em line dancing!
« on: May 26, 2014, 10:26:39 pm »
It was cloudy this morning with a pretty good chance of rain and I think they were just a little bored so they decided to washboard a little. Enjoy! I threw in the rooster audio at no additional charge :)

At the 12-second mark one of them darts after and chases off a tiny fly (or something)... That was pretty cool!

I've read a lot on washboarding, but have not read whether or not they do it if they're in a tree, house wall, TBH, etc...  Has anyone ever seen it done somewhere other than on a Lang hive?

tbone,
line dancing at its finest!  AWESOME, AWESOME video of washboarding, very much enjoyed!  although i have seen this a zillion times in my own hives i watched your vid 3 times tonight!  this is just the coolest thing to me when i see them doing this.  i have seen 10 of my hives doing this all at once, it is just amazing to me. no one really knows the true 'purpose' or 'biology' of washboarding, but it sure is cool!

thanks!

oh and ps, loved the rooster crowing!

That is good quality video of a really neat behavior.   I have video, which I can't currently find, of bees doing it on the trunk of a Catalpa tree.

You did GREAT on the video, tbonkel!!!  :)   I missed mine due to a focus issue. :(

There must of been an audtion for "Dancing With The Stars" coming up or something yesterday as my hives were doing the same thing.  :D   Conditions were temps in the low 90's, muggy and overcast with a storm front moving slowly toward us from the southeast that eventually delivered high winds and a good rain to us.  All hives (8) were actively washboarding...even the tiny swarm hive that sent it's mini dance troop out on the stage.  ;D  The rain ran me out of the beeyard and I presume the washboarders headed for cover, too. ;)

I can't help thinking that the bees are in concert, that they create an inaudible vibration of happiness while using the surface that they are on as an instrument ~ I'm going to stick with that, it's just too lovely to be work related  :)

Great video and close up of a not to often seen bee behaviour, thanks for posting.
