What a horrendous move
« on: June 01, 2014, 03:11:26 am »
Moved 2 hives both Russian Hybrids. One was very gentle, made substantial beards on front and sides of 2 story deep brood chambers. Other set up the same. Nasty was stung about 40 times.  But move complete, arthritis shouldn't be a issue for awhile.:-[

Hopefully you will have good forage for the bees at your new location.

Be prepared for a possible flu type reaction, it's actually a good thing, showing that your body is purging the venom, which in turn builds your immunity to the venom. You won't swell or itch anymore this season. Wishing you well Barry

Barry what was your final setup when moving the hives as you asked advice on 2 other threads you started. What was the down fall in the plan? what would you do or change the next time. I move hive at least 4 times a year and have a system that works for me. That being said it makes a huge difference on how close you get to the hive I bear hug the hive so the hive needs to be strapped so nothing twists. creating bee escapes and the bees need to be secured in the hive so they cant come out and walk up me when carrying them. And a little smoke to get them going in the opposite direction when removing the entrance screen it they are hanging on the other side ready to boil out.

Hey Apis, used mosquito netting to enclose both hives. No entrance  block. Was told once the move started bees would cluster with minimal smoking. Initially used no smoke just closed the netting up. Well the bees heavily bearded prior to closing the net.   No issues closing the net but hundreds of bees were outside the hives. Side note as I was ratchet strapping the hives, the one that was so nasty, well while prepping the hive, disturbed a large colony of carpenter ants. They proceeded to crawl all over the hive, including going into the hive with the predictable results...sorta thought life might be interesting thereafter...
Hive was " roaring " for the whole trip.
