Cant figure this swarm out. (video)
« on: June 03, 2014, 05:20:17 pm »
I caught a swarm May 16th and I still no signs of a queen. They have pulled about 8 of 10 frames but no eggs, or nothing.

I introduced a caged mated queen day before yesterday. I checked it this morning and they appear to be very hostile toward her still. The are covering
the screen and are hard to get off screen and as soon as I wipe them off they are immediately covering it up again.  If I sit the cage on top of the frames they have the whole cage covered. They are actually hard to get off the screen. Almost have to pull them off.

Does this sound like aggressive behavior? I took a short video of it.

I am scratching my head on this one. No signs of a laying worker or Queen. Even it was a virgin queen, shouldn't she be mated and laying by now. May16 to June 3rd?

I have not removed cork yet to expose sugar.

I lost two mated queens last year to colonies like this. Found them out of the queen cage and dead in front of the box. I would put in a frame of eggs and see if they will make a queen. If not I would be looking harder for her. Or maybe a worker that is now the queen. I understand you have seen no eggs so I would think they have a queen some where in there. Maybe the more knowledgeable beekeeps will chime in. Tom

Did yours end up having queens in them?

Here is a short video of how they are acting. Can someone tell if this is hostile or licking and lovin?

Yankee, I can only share the experience that I had when installing new queens this year for the first time. River told me to watch for:

their probiscus' were either going thru the screen to try and feed the queen, OR, they were turned around and trying to sting her. I feel they are trying to feed her by this video, but I'm not an expert at this time ~

Looking forward to input on this one ~

I released her this morning and just found her walking around on a frame.

So, the swarm was queenless and they were just overjoyed to have a queen.

I like happy endings. I was just sure they were going to ball her.

She has 8 frames of brand new pulled come ready to go. This one should be fun to watch build up.

Just as Jen said RB said. I could not tell from your video. You have to look close to see them feeding her through the cage.

Sounds like you made the right choice for sure. This hive should start to explode in about 30 days.

It looked like aggressive behavior and if you had released the queen they would have balled her maybe not in the aggressive stinging but could smother and over heat the queen. I think this was partially due to the age of the bees. Adding a frame or 2 of brood in a hive will comb the bees down. In most of the bee books i have read they say the queen should have enough candy so she is not released to early but after 3 days and the bees had settled down by the next day when you released her.
Good learning experience and thanks for sharing the video and link.

Yea, When I ran my finger over the screen, it reminded me of a windshield wiper in rain. It would cover in bees as fast as I wiped them off.

I was going to remove cork and let them start eating the candy and when I tried to remove cork it fell inside the cage. The candy had been hollowed from inside. As soon as the hole opened I had a bee go inside, so I removed the other side cork and put it in hive. I really figured that was that.

But 4 hrs later she was out walking around on a frame.

I guess they were just trying to release her. One thing I did notice is that lots of bees were on top of the frames kinda "flicking" their wings. Not fanning, their wings would just flick. I also noticed this on other hives I have sat mated queens on top of frames. Don't know if it means anything.
