It's so much more fun watching someone else do the cut outs!!
I envy you the ability to remove the bees without wearing a bee suit. I try to be so careful, but after the fourth or fifth sting I usually give in and put the veil up.
ALWAYS enjoy your vids JP, Thanks for posting them!!!

I did a cut out about a week ago and started with the suit on. I ended up taking about 6-8 stings on the hands and was glad I had the suit on. I too, am amazed at how the bees seem to respect him when he works them. But I think we see the best of his cutouts. He does a lot and I wonder what happens on the others. If it was me, I would only post the best. I have already been in a few situations where I thought, "boy, I'm glad I'm not taping this". Nothing against you JP. You 'da man when it comes to this stuff and I have really learned a lot!

Another great one JP!

The second best part about keeping bees is the great people you get to meet thru them.  ;)

I have seen videos of JP when the bees are overly aggressive and he has retreated and suited up, but for the most part if you stay calm around the bees the bees stay calm with you. Yes you take a few stings but when they don't effect you and you do not care if you get the occasional sting or 5, the bees remain calm with you.

I wonder if beekeepers go through "phases" as they get comfortable with the bees. When I did a cutout a week ago, I had a jacket and veil on, but my hands were open to any aggression from the bees and I took between six to ten stings. What's interesting is that I did an inspection yesterday and the bees were very nice, but one would occasionally bump or land on my hand and I would flinch like I was terrified of it. I felt stupid because I reacted that way and I don't know why I did. It seems that I feel less comfortable around them now than I did 1 year ago. I don't really like that.

tbone- "I felt stupid because I reacted that way and I don't know why I did. It seems that I feel less comfortable around them now than I did 1 year ago. I don't really like that.

I understand that statement~ I believe that when we see how JP or Scott works with the bees with such ease, that 'we' really want that natural quiet relationship with our bees as well.

It depends on what is going on in my life each day as to how easy I'm going to feel with the bees that day.

I've learned that even tho I pick a time of day when all the conditions are perfect for the bees to be content with me working with them for an hour, doesn't mean that that is a guarantee. I'm learning how to set the stage for when I approach the hives. I'm fed, quiet, mind clear just for the bees.

For me, now into my 4the season, my visits with the bees are more spontanious. I find myself daudling out in the yard watering this and that and without thinking I move towards the hives and life the lids and take a peek, lower the lids and let my instinct move me forward. Sort of like letting the bees tell me if they need help yet or not.

I am a healer by profession, when I lift the lid, I listen, look, and take in the scent. If all is well, I make a plan from there.

I think it will vary with everyone.  I started off feeling very positive and comfortable.  Because of that I have yet to suit or veil up.  Part of that is simply because I haven't had the $$ to buy anything yet, part of it may be I haven't been doing it long enough yet to regret not being protected!  I will say that this past Saturday one worker bee just kept buzzing and buzzing around my face and sunglasses... I was a tad bit nervous.  I started keeping bees with the intent of using this hobby to slow myself down because my life is WAAAAAAAAAAAAy too GO-GO-GO.  I enter the hives with a cool, collected, positive mindset and simply take my time.  I'm not afraid to point out, however, that I started a mere 4 weeks ago with packages.  The multiplication of bees will be starting this week and next.  There is much brood getting ready to hatch.  We'll see how my comfort level is them.

The time when it starts to get unnerving is when the supper is full of bees and now you don't have the empty frames to pull out first to make room for loosening and removing the frames with the bees on them. You get to a point that you are lifting frames and rolling bees if your not careful.
