Hey, those look just like mine. Some dark, some not so dark. Personally I like the dark ones but I can't see a difference in performance. The lighter ones are easier to find but I don't have much trouble there anyway.

I really like the first one!

Thank you, very nice collection of queens....I am partial to the rootbeer colored queen in the second picture.  But the brood pattern in the third picture would be the one I would want....Tom

thanks for sharing.  notice how the worker's color change just a little but I would guess if you looked closely at the drone population they would reflect the color of the queen.  viva la diversity!

I didnt get a picture of the gold tiger striped queen but I did get several pictures of different queens today;

   


























   Can you find the tiniest queen in the above picture?








   Typically.. Imported queens are Black/ Carniolan crosses or golden Italian queens.  The Marked queens are my VSH Queens, and the tiger striped beauties are from cut outs, swarms or from locally bred "new" queens I have raised.
   I was not specifically looking for queens today, but took pictures of a few of them as I went through the hives to insure they were still queen right and growing.
   My Package queens...
   Of ten packages, three superseded their queens within the first week. A couple more superseded by the third week, and one of them Simply vanished..  One of the hives I went through today had no eggs or queen that I could find...  But I did find this;
   



   So.... that will leave me with THREE of the original golden Italian queens from the packages, from a total of ten to start with..
   In one of the last pictures above is the littlest queen..  I keep expecting to see her superseded, but she is still pumping out the eggs to rival any of my fat bottomed girls.  She had eggs in four frames, well laid, and larger larvae and capped brood in another six frames..   She is blowing away my expectations, but I fear her time is limited unless she somehow plumps up..

   She was a supersedure from an original package queen that was even smaller than she is. Every time I look I am astounded she is doing so well. She is currently surpassing some of the other queens in brood size and density..   Her fortitude and determination are impressive, but in the end I doubt it will be enough..  I will let her alone until she starts to fail.

lazy shooter, the little queen is in scott's 13th photograph from the top.  look for her, she is of a golden color and about left of center, 5 bees are facing her.....

   So in producing queens from my favorite queen to populate my summer nucs..  I ended up with Golden queens, Black queens, and tiger striped queens, all from the same queen mother. She is a daughter of a VSH queen. She turned out to be quite mellow and produces well, with some hygienic traits.. Not as good as her mother, but acceptable at this stage..   
   Since "most" feral queens I catch tend to be the tiger striped queens, I am thinking that all of these genetics will eventually boil down to having ALL of the queens I make end up tiger striped?  Opinions?

I hear you Lazy, the queens i raise are different colors like you described? The tiger striped ones i get look kind of queen like? they look longer and leaner than a normal bee (almost like a yellow jacket?), but are good workers. When i buy queens i like the carni. breed, the blacker the better for me. Jack

The blacker queens seem to be longer and meaner looking from what I have seen ;

   


   the others seem to be fatter..



  I like the darker queens because they seem to be a little more frugal through winter than the golden queens... At least those from packages..   At this point I only have two of ten package queens that were not superseded. I am hoping they hang in there, I want to see how they winter.. the superseded queens will have been mated locally and may have an easier time..   We will find out this win*%$..    Hope it is milder than the last one we went through.

nice photos of the queens scott, lol on the 'meaner looking'.

only 2 package queens of 10 that were not superseded?  frustrating, but maybe better odds in the long run with the supersedures and mating with your local drones.

Ageed Mrs. River, but my goal was to test them through the w&*%#$ and see how they did in comparison to the dark and feral colonies I have..  Having been mated locally the replacement queens may have an easier time of it..   I'll let you know in April what the results are  ;D
