Honey From My First Cut Out
« on: August 04, 2014, 03:10:50 pm »
This is the honey comb that I was able to salvage from my first cut out. It's been sitting in the garage fridge for awhile. I went on a 6 day coastal trip with my girlfriend and when I came back this is what hubby set up for the crush and strain method, minus the crush. It get warmed up during the day and drains much faster than in the garage.

I need to strain it one more time after this draining in done. There was another post about a cotton sack/bag that other beeks use to do their final strain. Can you guys remind me of what that bag is? Thanks  ;D

Paint strainer bag from a paint or hardware store. Comes in 1 gal. and 5 gal. sizes.

Cheesecloth works well not as expensive.

Cheese cloth works well, but not if you are entering a honey contest. It leaves small bits of the cheese cloth in the honey and they dock points for them.

Okay then, if I buy a paint strainer thingee then when I'm done straining I can throw the strainer into the wash machine right?

Good info, but not planning on entering any honey this year, I'll be burying it in the back yard  :D

I just rinse it off to dilute the honey and flick the page to get rid of any wax partials.
Break up the comb to let it release the honey honey will not flow out of the cells very well.Put it in the paint bag to drain. once it is broken up.

No buy a new one and save it. Next year you can use the old bag again.

aha! I wondered what thread Apis was calling you an old bag in... Just found it!!
I seem to suddenly miss a lot of posts, and dont find them till I click the show ALL unread posts..   anyhow....
I use screens..  #8 hardware cloth, standard window screen, and an 800 micron screen..   I have the finer screens, 500 and 200 I think, but the local nature lovers living a town over want it ALL natural.. which is fine by me, I like it that way too.   I use the cheesecloth for filtering the wax when I render it  ;D

Scott- "I seem to suddenly miss a lot of posts, and dont find them till I click the show ALL unread posts..   anyhow....

That's all I ever click on, am I missing a step somewhere? I figured All Unread Posts was the most current...

This method hubby set up worked great, and then I did use cheesecloth to finish it off. Very happy with this batch of honey.
