Washboarding and added a super
« on: August 09, 2014, 02:54:39 pm »
Hi Everyone,
This entire past week the girls have been washboarding.  Large numbers of them.  So many in fact the the returning foragers are having a hard time gaining entrance to the hive.  They end up landing wherever they can, on the porch, on the washboarders (if that's not a word it should be!), on the hive body, wherever, and enter by walking over the washboarders. I don't think they ever stop washboarding!  When I visit the hive in the morning, there they are, scooting back and forth.  Mid-day it's the same thing.  My last visit of the day?  Yep, there they are!  This has gone on all week!  Don't they get tired?  It makes me think of young kids at a RAVE!  The other bizarre aspect of this?  Nobody seems to know why they do it!  Come on, really?  No one?

We inspected my hive today and it is chock full of bees.  There's still two and a half undrawn frames in the top deep.  The bottom deep is completely drawn and both deeps have LOTS of brood, capped, uncapped larva of different ages, and eggs.  So I made an executive decision.  Add a medium super.  It's undrawn plasticell foundation.  My goal in doing this is NOT to get honey for myself.  My goal is to give them more room and I hope that they will have more resources for the upcoming winter.  If nothing else maybe I'll have more drawn wax for next year.  I have been and will continue to feed them.

I meant for the pics to be between the paragraphs... oh well...

I have noticed multiple hives doing this as well in the last few days.  Wish I knew why!

I had a few doing this earlier in the year, they have stopped now. It's wild to watch.

If you got 2 deeps of brood I would get a super on as soon as you can. Or better yet send me the ailing queen so I can put here in one of my hives. I mean retirement homes ;D

ted i 'fixed' your pix, they are now between the paragraphs............ ;)

washboarding.......it is an awesome thing to see.......i get a kick out of it, and very true, no one, absolutely NO ONE knows why the bees do this, lots of theories as to this mystery behavior, but i sometimes think it is a sign of the bees and their 'well being'.

As I stated earlier I had added a medium super.  After re-thinking or perhaps over-thinking it I removed the medium and put a deep in it's place.  The thought being that any honey or stores that might end up there is for the bees anyway.  I also thought doing so would help with making splits next year.  I will have to move the deep around to do any inspections but, I have a Josh to help with that! ;D

Since I'm doing an OA treatment next Saturday, and the directions say to use one of the little scoops of OA per deep, I guess I'll be using three scoops of OA?  The top deep (the third in the stack) is undrawn plasticell foundation.  This IS the right thing to do, isn't it?  Three scoops?  Thanks, Ted

The idea is to make sure there is enough vapor to get to all the bees. The good thing about the OA is that it will not hurt your bees. I would probably do 2.5 scoops but a little more or less will not cause a problem. Thats one of the things I like about OA Vapor, and The bees will transfer the crystals through contact.
