I just completed my summer extraction---but had a lot of trouble with my extractor.
I own a four frame, hand cranked extractor (mfctr: Dadant) with nylon gears for the "transmission"  Somehow (posssibly because of wear and tear over the years) the gear-teeth jump and skip, making a lot of noise and trouble,  preventing smooth operation.  The main drive shaft is made of aluminum and sits inside holes drilled in an aluminum casting, without bearings.  I always oil the contact points but some leeway has developed and the cover of the barrel, to which the casting is bolted, seems to flex silghtly during operation.
Question
1. Has anyone else experienced this problem with this, or a similar extractor? 
2. Does anyone have any ideas as to how this problem can be corrected?

I'd check shaft size, the diameter of the nylon gears, number of teeth on each, then go on the web and look to see if Boston Gear or some other manufacturer has a steel bevel gear equivalent.  If the shafts have developed a little "slop" you might be able to find a way to bush them.  The bushings could be brass, oilite or (considering this is food processing) Delrin or nylon.  A lot of this depends on how heavily built the support structures are on the extractor.  If the shafts run in the same aluminum casting you mentioned, this should be doable.

I would contact Dadant as Iddee said. You may also be able to "shim" one gear or the other with a thin washer to make it engage deeper.

FWIW, our Club has a new Dadant Little Wonder extractor that had a similar issue.  I found some washers under the crankshaft mount.  There was a better mesh of the gears after removing those washers.  A long shot that this info would help you, but you never know.  Best of Luck Ef  :)
