Theo the new bee dog
« on: August 18, 2014, 02:49:15 pm »
After loosing my faithful side kick  Bam Bam a few months ago. I have found another Great dane pup to tag along and help with hives. Introducing  Theo at 2 weeks old. He just got his eyes open yesterday and will be at my side in about 5 weeks

LOL!!  That is one HUGE lap dog RRat..   Jen.. If I gave my dog foot massages like that I am afraid I would have my WIFE at the foot of my recliner..   In that position she could escape, not as easy for her to do from the lap!

Hey Rat - I was wondering how much dane go for now. Did you have to buy this new pup?

Danes are high priced.   A registered dane pup will sell for $1000.00 on up. We paid well over that for pebbles but she came from a show breeder. Our intentions was to breed her with bambam but he did not meet the AKC definition of a dane as his size was over breed standard. And his breeder had a contract that said if at one year he didnt meet standard we would have to have him neutered.  ( he stood at 36 inches from top of front shoulders to the ground and could stand on all fours and drink out of the kitchen faucet.). Theo will be a big dog also both him and BAM BAM are eurodanes which is a bigger breed then american danes.   Theo we paid $250.00 for without papers. We know the owner well and they called the day they was born to let us know there was 2 piebalds. a friend of ours in the shrine took the other piebald that was female. Being friends the owner gave us a discount on the pup.  His litter was an oops the owners have 4 danes 3 males and a female with one being a totally white mutant that is deaf and partial blind and the sweetest dog you could ask for. All are rescued the mother was from a puppy mill and was removed from the breeders by the state and placed in the home we got it from.  They thought she had been spayed as most generally they will spay the females before they leave state custody.   Theo is piebald marked which was caused by a mutant recessive gene in the mother.  Somewhere in the mothers line a harlequin male and female was bred together causing the mutant gene.  Piebalds are commonly deaf or blind.  Theo has blue eyes which could be a sign he will be blind which we are fine with as we was looking to adopt a dane with the disability. They make great dogs even with the disability. He is not showing any other eye problems which is encouraging and his eyes may turn to brown later.  So far he has not shown signs of deafness and his ears have opened up which is a good sign. Both the mother and father are well marked good looking danes so we should have a good healthy dane other than the possible problems mentioned.  The mother had 9 pups with 4 tricolored which is sought after and   3 harlequin and 2 piebald Theo with black markings and the other grey where Theo is black.

Interesting. We have a dane in our neighborhood that has a mink appearance to it coat. He's so beautiful!

My mother raised two danes, one when she was in her 30's, and one she retrieved from an animal shelter when she was in her 60's. Shane was under 2 years when she brought him home. He had been kept in a very small chicken coop and kids were poking him with sticks thru the coop. Needless to say he didn't do well with children. But my daughter at the time was about 6 years old when she would stay with my mom. She was the only child he would not growl at.

The hardest part for me is that danes done live very much longer than 8-9 years due to inner breeding, they have a small heart.

I read something recently about certain breeds of dogs that some insurance companies require a specialize dog liability policy to cover.  Some of the breeds were no surprise.( Dobies, Rottweillers, Pit Bulls)  The Great Dane was included because of their size.
Just something to consider.

Baker, I'm not surprised. I have a friend who's neighbor had two danes. My friend witnessed an awful fight between the two danes and one other dog in the neighborhood. Needless to say the danes won that battle. So sad. However, it has been stated that if you have one dane that the possibilites of it being a fighter are almost nill. One dane would be enough for me  :)

Greyhounds don't usually make it much past 10 years either. Strokes and bone cancer being right up there as age limiters. I also tend to think that they have several years wore out of them in the first 3 of their "careers".

One of the things I like about the greyhounds is that they are couch potato's. I like a dog that can lay around and be comfortable at my feet. And I'm looking at another breed of dog that doesn't shed so much.
