Evicting drones already
« on: August 20, 2014, 09:20:43 pm »
Don't understand why, night temperatures haven't dropped below 62 yet? Still on a nectar flow, raising lot's of brood still.

Same here Barry... Lots of drones have bit the dust. Feel sorry for the little guys, especially when there is a couple of girls biting and stinging the blazes out of him. Doesn't seem right some how ~

Have had some nights in the low 50's but still have quite a pile of drones running about.. which is good!!!  One of the two remaining package queens  JUST decided to supersede...    That leaves me with only ONE of ten original queens that came with the packages...

This time of year my bees cut back on the drones somewhat. There will still be drones flying for close to two months here. Just not as many as there was.

I haven't actually seen any evicted yet but I'm working 10 hrs a day usually 7 days a week. I haven't seen some of my hives in close to a month.

As Apis said its the shorter days.  Bees are or in-tune to the length of the day than weather. Weather can vary day to day where the length of day is a steady shortening of length

Hey Rod! I don't have hardly any in my hives, I have to really look for them. A lot of dead and wandering drones in front of my hives

Your way north of me . My bees normally fly all winter long and are only trapped in the hive by weather for a couple days at a time . My starter hive superseded their queen last feb.  2013 . I have one hive that will see drones in dec.

I inspected my hives yesterday at 2:00 p.m.  It was 103 degrees F.  The bees were quite nice and cooperative.  We still have lots of brood and drones.  In each hive I had one frame that was solid brood and a couple of other frames that contained mixed brood and honey with some empty cells.  I was hoping to see more honey, but I assume the 100 plus temperature days make for less nectar even thought the cotton fields are blooming.  i am driving to my outward today.  I'm only 150 bee line miles from Mexico, and we won't have a freeze until mid to late November, as a general rule.

went through hives today with Ted, and found several that still have drone brood, and even drone larvae.  Havent seen any drones getting booted yet.

Barry, your posts don't give your location?  what latitude or state are you in?  My drones get evicted during midsummer dearth if I don't feed, but normally I still have some until close to first frost when they all get the boot.
