In looking into my family history on my Father's side, I came across an account of my great-great-great grandfather. The following quote is from his grandson, my great grandfather's brother, I believe. "I was quite a small boy when I knew him. I first remember him when he moved from Hilltown (Pa.) to his son Enos's home. The winter before he moved, however, I remember that he brought several hives of bees to my father's place and he would sit out in the yard, watching them swarm". If anyone has ever had a passing thought about looking into their ancestry, I highly recommend doing so. I find it fascinating. I am lucky to have photo's of the earliest kind of quite a few of my ancestors, along with some oil paintings and drawings (in charcoal) which only adds to the fascination. From the same source of the above quote, I learned a few ancestors served directly under General Washington in the Revolutionary War. You never know what you might uncover. I can remember my father tracing his roots, back when there was no internet. All the research was done in libraries, church records and all government sources, as well as writing to distant relatives or possible distant relatives. I find the internet a useful tool and a good place to start or reference, but still the slower, plodding method yields the best results and certainly shouldn't be passed over. Attached drawings are my great grandmother, great grandfather and the last one I have yet to identify. My great grandfather always kept those mutton-chops, all he needed was a top hat. <--I hope she was a good cook.

John67x, that is really neat.  Family trees are like birthdays.  Everyone has one and they are all different.
I have recently discovered the tv show Who Do You Think You Are on TLC.  With the magic of television, Ancestry.com, and producers, they take celebrities and walk the celebrity through the research of their family tree.  Of course the producers have done their homework and found an interesting facet of the family tree to focus on.  Many of the celebrities get teary eyed when they discover the hard ships and sacrifices someone made to secure their future.
In addition to a history lesson, I think the show informs people of different archives, records and data bases that they can use to trace their trees.  Sadly, African Americans have to utilize slightly different research methods, but that's informative too!
In case you can't tell, this is my new favorite show.

   I know my  great grandfather had bees, my father remembers being told to stay away from the hives and being stung when he was quite little. No pictures, just stories..

I could really care less about celebrities, though.

Prior to the world wide web, the logistics of doing research was a challenge.  Those that did the work devoted many, many hours, time and money.  One can't rely on the internet entirely, but it is a place to start.  There are also a lot of military records and census records available out there online.

If you didn't have a genealogy show involving celebrities, who's family tree would you focus on?  It's all about ratings (and money.  It's always about the money.).

My uncle on my father's side spent much of his later retirement studying both family's geneology. He and my aunt had plenty of money to travel and search, including visting the morman archives. Turns out that I am a decendant of Chief Powhatan, Richmond Virginia, father of Pocahontas, who married John Rolfe.

When I have more time on my hands, I would like to do my mother's side of the family.

I have a second cousin that has devoted a great deal of her time to research.  No one famous in our tree.  Just the knowledge that they lost the family farm right after the civil war because of the inability to pay the $5 in taxes.

The first gun I ever owned was a single shot, octagon barrel, 32 caliber rifle. My Great, Great Grandfather killed 2 revenuers with it. That's all the ancestry I want to know.

On my fathers side of the family.My great grandmother Mary Taylor married to Frank Brooks my great grandfather. was a cousin to President Zachary Taylor.
On my mothers side of the family, My grandmother Ally Haynes, was the mother of Dan Longwell, founder of Life magazine..
I'm afraid to dig into my grandfathers family tree, Arthur Raymond Haynes,  he was a Irishman. Jack

with my background and general curiousity, i have done a fair amount of and years of research on my own family.......
that's all i will say.......

anyways, i think the ancestry show, the few times i have seen it in the past ought to pick common folks instead of celebrities.....and pay for it.......

It's too bad they didn't have Iddee's great-great-grandfather's 32 cal.  I do agree my great grandfather does look quite a bit like David Crosby, dunno why it didn't occur to me, love C.S.N. and Neil Young as well.

I never met either one of my grandpas, and only my grandma on my moms side. My grandpa on my dad's side though was quite a feller from the stories I'm told.

Henry Bundy was a preacher, (Methodist I think) in Terra Haute, Indiana. He was suspicious of his wife, and hid in the woods by a spring and waited. Sure enough a guy showed and shortly his wife showed and they were having an affair! He shot the guy and hit the road. Somewhere along the way he met a gang of outlaws known as the James gang. He ran with them awhile robbing mostly trains I think. His run with them was short lived but he made it to Arkansas where they stopped for water at another spring and he met a beautiful lady and ended up marrying her. He lived there until his death but not without leaving a not so great mark on that area. My dad was just like him but settled down (somewhat) when he got older. There are a few more stories that I heard about Henry, and he was not a man anybody wanted to mess with.
