In an hour all my bees will be gone.....
« on: September 04, 2014, 05:24:19 am »
Well long story short after my last cut out, I went put the bees into a box from the vac box. They came out swinging and stung me several times I started to break out in hives and a couple other symptoms. Went to the doctor and got a shot. Every thing got back to normal pretty quickly. The doc called two days later and told me it would get worse each time I was stung from now on. So some friends of mine are buying all my bees and equipment. Looks like I will be a side line player and a fisherman from now on. Take care every one and I will be around just not actively going after bees. I know I have to give them up but it is not easy. Tom

So sorry to here about that, but ones health is more imported than a hobby of fun with the bees, take care and let us know how it goes.

I am really sorry to hear of this developement Tom, it's just not fair. Consider reviewing riverbee's thread, it may prove to be of value in regards to an eventual return to a passion.

Sorry to learn about your "signing off" this addiction.
I wonder if there is a category "honorary member".  Your opinions will still be highly valued here.
Whatever the case, remember that even non-beeks sometimes get stung.  For that reason alone it would be wise for you to undergo the desensitization process and until given a clean bill of health, be prepared with an epi-pen when bee season is open.
Of course, when you are cleared for stings you can always re-join the active ranks---should you wish.

Tom, I hope you can get past it and back into the bees, but if not, your knowledge of nature and the outdoors is still highly prized here, so please stay around. Wishing you the best of luck in finding a solution.

I will be around here to try and help anyone that I can. I have the epipens coming soon as the doctor said I need to carry one when I am outdoors cutting wood or hunting/trapping...I will still be around to see how you all are doing. My bees are all gone as is all my equipment. Bitter sweet morning. Thank you all for your replies. Tom

My neighbor sold his hive (one of my swarms he caught and diligently fed up) and suit and everything as soon as I could find him a buyer after an emergency room visit. I gave him a jar of honey, and he is allowed to wear a suit over here and help me if he wants. He isn't fully allergic, but he is a big fan of his riding lawn mower and the bees were not fans. I wasn't home when he took a head sting and he didn't know to take benadryl, had to go get steroids.

tom, i am very sad for you  and very sorry to read what has happened.

like others have said, please stay around.  consider the desensitization shots tom, as ef mentioned. had i given up my bees or not been a bee keeper, i would have chosen the process for the protection anyway.  there is another member here ShepardsWatchFarm, who recently posted that he would be going through the shots:
Against doctors recommendation

give it some thought, or send him a pm, or if there are any questions i can answer, i certainly would.

whatever your decision, you are a valued member here, whether you are actively keeping bees or not.  you can teach others, and also as iddee mentioned, your knowledge of nature and the outdoors.

Folks this was my second time getting back in to honey bees My wife has asked me to stay out of this business. So at my age I am just going to try and help any new folks work with bees. I will tell my friends that bought the honey bees etc to join here as well. Thank you again for all your kind words. Tom

Though educational, I've found this thread to be fairly disheartening.  I feel for ya.

From what you've written, it sounds like you'll be able to continue your beekeeping vicariously through us by staying on this forum.  If you need a new hobby and enjoy woodworking, maybe you could make & sell woodenware to local beeks in your area and enjoy their stories as well!  I, personally, don't know if I could mentally do that... being so close, yet so far away...  But I would probably try it for a while.

I wish you the best!

First, Thank You all very much. It has been a real downer for sure. The young couple that bought my bee will be members here soon.

I have gone through my sheds and found some old comb making boxes etc, and a few more boxes for swarm boxes or what ever they need them for. They will be down for any remaining items I can come up with. They sent me a picture of the bees at their new location.

These folks are building their own home up on the ranch (upper right in the photo) and will give the girls a good home with you all helping. Tom

From the set-up it looks like you found some serious, responsible folks to buy your hives.
I'm sure it's a bittersweet parting for you, but---

I'm sorry for you Tom. Nice looking spot for the bees  The trees will provide wind protection for the girls in winter.
