new grandbaby, tumor on my rotti
« on: September 10, 2014, 11:03:59 am »
This week has been a mixed bag - the new grandbaby is beautiful, born last night before 9 pm.
Took my rotti in to an ER clinic when he jumped and hurt his right front leg, while there had the vet look at the chewing on his foot he'd been doing ended up biopsying the foot lump and 2 more, one of those is a mast cell tumor, very tiny, but apparently they give off histamine and acid, and the itching on the foot might have been tumor caused

As this has all come on recently I am taking him in for surgery tomorrow, new vet. He was just in with my old vet that apparently specializes in high end grooming, for a lump check in June and they found nothing but I am not sure they really looked. Got an estimate from them to remove the tumors, they included a dental cleaning and dremeling his toenails in their estimate...  He is 7. anesthesia will be serious enough a risk, but he is much loved and my grandkids adore him... 4 year old lets him out of his crate to love on him anytime he is supposed to be crated (like for his dinner)

This is Bronx at about 2.5 years old before I trained him to stay off the sofa (so people would fit) http://i338.photobucket.com/albums/n406/gypsi_fw/pets/bronx_alex2feb09.gif

Want to walk them. Later on I will photobucket the pic of me trying to take a nap when Bronx jumped up to help me.  He is a great photobomber, never misses an empty lap or a person lying on sofa, even if he will stay off Unless I am there.

People who have pets are a different breed. When it looked like Rosie had broken a toe (pretty ugly sideways looking) we brought her in. They said because of her age they needed to do blood work before anesthetic (greyhounds are kinda special anyways for anesthesia). We said to scale her teeth while she was out. Over $700 later, it turns out it was only a sprain, and it popped back in when they were pulling on it for the x-rays!

I went out on my local beg borrow trade group and asked for references for a new vet and I think I am going to be thrilled with my choices.

Old vet is kind of a cadillac vet, mani pedi for the dog during cancer surgery is just a bit much for me.

I did spend 400 at the ER vet but the actual injury was 90 for the exam plus meds for inflammation. When I had her check the lump on his foot things got expensive, but it was necessary, the needle biopsy for $35 may well have saved my dog's life, and hopefully I'll get another 4 or 5 years with him. I already have, from the ER vet, his pain meds and antibiotics (for the chewed foot will also work for post surgical) I am not having lab run on his mast cell to find out if it is stage 1 2 or 3, as stage 1 is early enough, stage 2 calls for chemo which I won't do, and stage 3 is start crying now he just doesn't know he is dead yet.

I won't have chemo done on him. I'm a melanoma survivor, and a friend of mine had a mole removed at the same time as I did. They didn't catch hers in time.  She suffered through 7 years of chemo and radiation before she died. I will not put my dog through that.

I will enjoy him while he is comfortable and do the moderate and expedient thing and have the tumor, and a cyst, removed tomorrow, and have his teeth cleaned in case I am in time so he doesn't get heart disease....

He is a lovely puppy, very friendly, the vets just adore him..  Thank you for listening

I'm going with no news is good news, surgery was good, nice wide margins, I am not paying almost $200 for the labwork, since I will not inflict chemo on him, and he had a checkup 2 months ago, assuming it is stage 1, got his toenails trimmed (not dremeled, no extra charge) and his teeth cleaned, so he is good to go. On antibiotics and pain meds.

Thank you for all your good wishes.  New grandbaby must be keeping mom busy, haven't heard a word from anyone in 24 hours, but I've been busy...

I know this is an old topic.  that grand baby has the prettiest blonde curls ever and her favorite dog at my house is my old rotti, who is still alive due to turmeric paste, benadryl and me making a lot of meatballs out of canned dog food to hide the pills in.  I wasted 10 minutes trying to upload 2 pics.  Have things to do

I was just reading away thinking Gypsi had a real emotional rollercoaster going on.  Then I looked at the date of the original post!
So glad both baby and furry baby are doing well!   :D

the old dog has become the ambassador of rotti, as we bucket listed thru the last 2 years he got to ride in the truck and visit more people  Now he, and the grandbaby, are both spoiled rotten.

I might as well follow up on old posts, I never know when I will be off-list too busy for months

I just realized this is a two year old thread. Feeling really dumb now. I will check dates in the future. BTW, how is that grandbaby-walking yet?

Grandbaby is walking and running.  I had a great picture to post but it wouldn't do it. I guess I have to sign up for post image to upload here. I have enough trouble with photobucket getting congested and acting like malware. I don't want photos scattered all over these big photo storage places.

Retract that thing before the computers start crashing. I bet you can't store that in a cloud.
