Been Cooking Deer Camp Food All Day Long
« on: September 26, 2014, 12:21:36 am »
Cleaned out the freezer of venison to make room for three more bucks  :)

Venision stew, oatmeal muffins to grab for the morning hunt, fried chicken, and there is a mac salad somewhere buried under camp stuff in the fridge in the garage.  I'm whooped

Dang it all looks good.  I don't believe I have ever eaten oatmeal muffins.  My bride makes some really good blueberry muffins, but oatmeal sounds good.  I love oatmeal cookies.  And I didn't know that anyone fried chicken at home.  I thought all fried chicken came from a "fast food" business.  Like I said, it sure looks good.

Our deer season opens in the second week of November.  Oh, I forgot, bow season is the month of October.

Seeing 'Camp meat' in your thread title brought back a fall morning in Montana in about 1973.  Six of us were camped in the Little Belt mountains southwest of Great Falls.  We needed camp meat.  On the first morning and shooting a 7mm mag (with 63.4 gr of 4831 behind a 160 gr boat tail spitzer), I went to one knee and shot a doe.  I was kneeling in thick grass about 24 inches tall.  The shot was off and after a count of a couple seconds, the grass in front of the muzzle for 20-25 yards bent down and away from the muzzle and then stood up again in reverence for an awesome modern firearm.  Doesn't sound like much, but was a peak day for me and the shot brought meat to eat in camp for the bunch of us.  Our preacher was with us and was not schooled in eating game.  We cut off a piece of tough flank steak, cooked it and presented it to him.  As he smiled and fought to get each bite cut, chewed and swallowed, we smiled too.  ;)

Thanks for tickling my memory jen  :)

Nice story Lou  :)  I have soo many of those stories in my pocket. I like to get away from cooking while in camp so I can hunt as much as possible, so I prepare a lot of food ahead of time. It's so nice when the first buck comes in, raises the moral of the hunters, especially during times when we have been hunting hard for a week and see nothing. Cooking the deer heart is a ritual and we all partake and enjoy the animal and hoist our liquid spirits in honor of...   ;)

Our rule was the next guy to complain about the food in camp became the camp cook.  Is that a universal rule?

Ha! I cook homemade food because most of our hunters go to the $1 Store and buy crappy food. I just can't do that, don't have the gut for that food anymore. No one complains!  ;)

Hey Beeboy, I agree the food looks awesome.  At the risk of raising a woman's ire, is that your mom in your avatar.

Okay lazy, as to not raise anyone's ire, this would be the more genteel way to inquire..

"Hey beeboy? how are those two lovely ladies connected to you in your avatar?

Or,.... "Hey Beeboy? Such lovely women in your avatar?"

And beeboy would come back with "Why thank you lazy, they are my wife and daughter, I love them so much!"

You see, beeboy and I exchanged honey with lotion, and I asked the same question. His response was so heartwarming. I was captured by how lovely the women are with the sun coming across their face and such genuine smiles.

There is your etiquette lesson for the day...  :D  whether you asked for it or not...  :D

Fifty years in the oil patch has not done much for my etiquette, but in my favor, I don't see but one woman in the avatar.  Had I seen two women of differing ages, it would have provided me a clue.  Oh well, I'm sorry to bother those of you of more gentile manners.

Uh Oh Lazy! I was talking in a humorous way... never once intended to offend in any way. I do hope you read in my etiquette post that I had asked Beeboy the same question. I thought it would make beeboy smile.

My sincere apologies Lazy  :-[
