New shotgun
« on: October 24, 2014, 06:05:18 pm »
I haven't picked it up yet, but I am going to buy my wife a new shotgun.  It's a Kel Tec KSG 12 gauge.  It holds 15 shells.

I'm excited.  I can't wait to shoot it.  I pity the poor fool that comes in the house and has to deal with my wife!

I'm betting you don't argue with her after she gets it.    ;D

Officially, it'll be hers.  We're both veterans, so she can handle weapons.  And I do work a lot of night shifts.  But I will shoot it some.  :)

It holds seven rounds on each side with a button to pick which side to use.  So you could load one side with one type of shell, and the other side with another type of shell.

I think I've come up with a new term for people like me:  Rambo red neck or Ram Neck.   :eusa_think:

Of course, if I wear fatigues and carry that gun, and put on a red nose and orange hair, I could be Rambo-zo!

My friends used to laugh at me quite often..  Hunched over a bench filing on a new receiver for an AR, or a 1911 so the parts would fit correctly..  Not for hours. Not for days, but for WEEKS at a time..  Then came the day that I built my first .50 on a surplus barrel..  they chuckled and giggled and nudged each other with smiles... until I pulled the trigger...  the concussion from the home made muzzle break, and seeing the HOLE in the concrete knocked the wise cracks out of them..
The .50 BMG round.. look out your window.. there is NOTHING you can see that it will not utterly destroy...  Then I started working on the semi auto version...   most of them started avoiding me completely.. those that didnt, got to shoot a LOT of fun toys... I have SO MANY good memories of something so simple as shooting...

I have never had to use a gun to shoot at a human being, so to me, they are instruments of fun. Toys to enjoy.. My son is not so fortunate..  There was a time he shared my love of firearms, in building and shooting.. the trip he took to Afghanistan changed that, and it changed him..   I usually shoot alone now, and have sold MOST of the toys I had, keeping only those I felt necessary, or those that hold sentimental value, like my grandfathers .22, and my great grandfathers side by side 16 gauge..   I kept an M1 Garand to play with, and all the rest of my firearms are for home defense or hunting purposes..   I feel fortunate, that I got to play as much as I did, with so MANY different guns and calibers..  My Gun shop, was an excuse to play, despite what I told my wife.. it made money, so it was worth it..
If you have the money, and the time, I encourage you to "play" a lot!!!!   You also need to reload your own ammunition..   It brings the price of ammo DOWN to an affordable level..   NO, it will NOT save you money, but you get to shoot a lot more for the same money.
Of course, you tell the wife its cheaper if you reload, and it IS!!!!!
Sounds like your wife may be a little wiser than mine was, so use CAUTION!!!       ;D

Sage advice that I will heed!  :)

My wife's son spent a year in Iraq as a medic and returned 80% disabled.  So I can empathize.  He was 22 when he went over and he had to grow up a lot during that year.  I think body recovery detail was probably the worst for him.  Especially retrieving people he knew or sometimes his friends.  I'm sure there were some horrific sights over there he'll never talk about.  But, with his physical and mental scars, all we can do is love him and hug him as much as we can.  Outwardly, he seems fine.  He has an occasional headache.  But only he and God know the extent of what he feels inside.

But, having said that, we all feel it is a wise course of action to be prepared in case things get bad.  I remember after Katrina, when the pipelines were shut down and the gas stations were running out of gas, my wife (who is really the smart one around here) said, "This country is only one truckload away from starvation."  So ever since, we've tried to look ahead and have some food and water tucked away.  We have a pretty extensive first aid kit, and solar battery chargers, and that type of thing.  I don't think we're doomsday preppers, be can make it for a couple of weeks if things were to disintegrate.

I read a book that changed my outlook on life called, "Alas Babylon".  It is a fiction, maybe even science fiction, about a nuclear war with the Soviet Union.  It was written in the 50s and is very politically incorrect.  But the moral to the story, so to speak, is that if you can't eat it, if it doesn't keep you warm or dry, it is worthless.  Think about living on a deserted island.  Money, jewelry, fancy cars, etc., won't keep you alive.  Cigarettes and coffee would be sorely missed by many, but you won't die from lack of it.  Salt, on the other hand is vital for life, and you can't grow it, and if you don't stumble upon a deposit of it, or if you can't desalinate ocean water, you won't have any.  People that live in urban settings will have a hard time growing or raising enough food to survive on.  People that are able to feed themselves must be able to defend themselves.

OK, I've went off on a tangent here.  But it's something to think about.  Especially with the violence in the world and the potential for an Ebola epidemic.

Hey slow, don't think i would want to go up against that thing  :oI just bought a Henry 22 lever action rifle, a very good shooting gun, smooth action, accurate, made in the US of A, the stalk and forearm are made from wood, from Mo. walnut trees. Made me feel good buying American made, something that has almost become extinct  Jack

Yep, I buy American when it's available.

The best I can tell, the shotgun is made in Cocoa, FL.

An update if anyone's interested.  I got the shotgun and finally got a chance to fire a few rounds with it.

Afterwards, I had an ice pack on my shoulder.   :-[

Nah, I didn't want to use up all my shells.  And my step-son was shooting it, too.  Besides, I don't think my shoulder could have took it.  And they were just low-power target rounds.  But we did have fun that day.

I don't own any "black stocked" guns, but the Kel Tec weapons are highly rated among it's users.  I am, and have been since a boy, an avid shooter.  I have reloaded rifle, pistol and shotguns for the past 50 plus years.  My favorite long guns are black powder cartridge rifles.  I reload and shoot a 45-70, 45-90 and 45-110 (Quigley's caliber) on a routine basis.  Some 30 to 40 feral pigs a year and dispatch to wherever they go each year with one of these rifles.  The 45-90 and 45-110 are Shiloh Sharps and the 45-70 is a C Sharps.  They are exquisite hand made rifles and I love them to death.

I am not a gun nut, I just enjoy applying my skill and knowledge of ballistics to an enjoyable sport.  I don't carry a pistol or even have a carry permit.  I just love to shoot.

Have fun with that new toy, and I wish all of us would keep some self defense weapons close at hand.  In an emergency, law enforcement people won't be there.  The come AFTER the fact.  Be a boy scout and be prepared.

One of the things most overlooked by the cons, is that guns ARE fun to shoot. Some of the most memorable times I had with my kids we spent shooting.
Where I live, there is no police officer posted within 30 minutes.  THe local joke here is, that if you need them, you have to call their office and make an appointment two days in advance if you are going to be robbed or broken into...

I have seen them arrive in fifteen minutes, which is great response time considering they are based 20 minutes away.

I have a friend that goes to buffalo shoots with his old cartridge guns. He is trying to talk me into it..  I have done competition shoots with my old M1 Garand and the .30 carbine in original military classes, and greatly enjoyed it. Not sure I want to spend the money for one of those cartridge guns..  If I get good a tshooting 500 to 1000 yards.. how will ANY critter be safe again?   ;D

i have always enjoyed shooting, and shooting clays with a shot gun, ton of fun.  my father taught us kids at an early age to shoot all of his guns and how to care for them. when i was a kid growing up, he was a caretaker for a rod and gun club and we lived on the property the rod and gun owned and had access to the shooting range, and clay shooters.  i suspect that the 3 of us (older siblings) suffered from not wearing any hearing protection as the three of of us all have hearing loss to varying degrees, the other two siblings do not, so us 3 older siblings mix up words and holler at each other quite frequently......... :D

i also enjoy going to the local rod and gun clubs dinners and special events here in ellsworth.  they will have clay shooting before any event.  the shot guns they supply are not the best, you can bring your own, some do, i don't.  me and another gal are pretty good no matter what we use, and it's just plain fun to beat the guys at it when we can.

in our township, the joke about a local deputy sheriff responding is call the sheriff and immediately order a pizza, the pizza shows up well before the sheriff ever does. or order the pizza and then call the sheriff, and unfortunately it's true.  they are spread thin across a big county, 3 to 5  maybe, and i know they also handle a great deal of bs calls.

@the other Lazy:

A good black powder cartridge rifle and the reloading dies, Big (think 560 grain bullets and 7,000 grains per pound) bullets and a drop tube will probably set you back two grand, and if you start with a Sharps it will likely be three grand.  Those rifles are tedious to reload and take a lot of time cleaning and caring for brass.  It's not something for those that don't love the sport.  It's just that when you pull the trigger and launch that big bullet in a CLOUD of smoke and see one of those silhouette target jump off its base it is almost as good as, well you know.

@Riverbee:

I have a lady friend that usually beats me at the clays, and there are a few ladies that are always in the hunt with the Black Power guns.  Women can shoot as well as men.  If women have good equipment they have all the other tools to shoot and shoot well.  My wide doesn't have the love of shooting that I do, but she is a good shot with her .38 S&W and her 20 gauge superposed Browning.

My grandsons, ages 14 and 12 are both very good shots.  That's the only thing that they have consistently let me teach them.

Slowmodem, with an 18 1/2-inch cylinder bore barrel that is an awesome up close and personal weapon.  Dang, that is one compact weapon to carry 12 rounds.  I like it.
