Since I am on pets.
« on: November 10, 2014, 07:53:19 am »
Son started wanting a dog about 1994. I kept saying no as every time the kids got pets they would get tired of them so Kare and I would get stuck taking care of them. Mind you I grew up on a farm and had all kinds of pets from a pig we named peanut butter to a red angus heifer names sweetie along with several dogs.
I was working 12 hours shifts 7 days a week back then and just didn't want or need a critter to care fore. Finally Kare started working on me so in Sept 1996 we go get a chocolate lab puppy. I didn't have to deal with it very much for about 8 months. Then the son got tired of caring for her. she got a Spanish name on her papers which translated to a bit of chocolate, we called her Chip. She was a camera shy dog. But I got this one of her when she was getting old.

Wasn't to long and she just became my dog always with me no matter if Kare was around or not. Kare kept wanting a dog of her own so I told her to get one. She came home from the pound while I was at work with this little puppy named Bosco Jan 2000.

He was almost a year old here and being boundary trained. He liked cooling off in Chips pool too.

Once again this dog became mine as I spent so much time with them during the day be fore I went to work. Kare still wanted a dog that would be her's.
She got a call from a friend that there was a little vusla that had been set to be killed but it disappeared from the kennel before the deed could be done. Would we like to have her and she bewell away from the area where the Kennel way. So in March we took a 3 hour drive and picked her up. such a tiny little pup I could see why a breeding kennel wanted her dead.
She was a costly thing as she got sick about as soon as we got her home. She spent 3 days under special care at out vet but she did pull thru and once again became my dog as I retired in April so was home all the time. Kare was supposed to retire at the same time but kept fooling around for a couple more months before she finally did. To late Daisy was my dog so I now had 3 dogs that went with me any time I was out side. We got this habit of walking the woods and vacant field next door every morning and every evening taking about a hour.

She was a fairly good hunting dog even though I didn't make any effort to train her as I just wasn't doing that type of hunting by then.

In May 2001 Kare once again wanted her very own dog. We drive to Detroit to a find you best friend many shelters join together to do every spring. I tried to talk her into a 6 year old chocolate lab but she wasn't wanting a fully grown dog.
She found nothing there she liked so we drove back home and stopped at a shelter on the way. Kare didn't seen any thing that tripped her trigger but I found a tiny little scared thing I told Kare she was coming home with us. I named her baby and discovered I called all the girls baby and the male springer bud. I renamed her Jewel.

She had been badly abused before she was rescued and taken to the shelter. Took a while to gain her trust but being gentle and treats finally won her over. She loved the snow so that really won my heart as I love the snow also. We would call her our polar dog as she would sit out in the cold watching the birds and stuff down by the creek for hours.

Chip was just over 17 when she had a stroke and could not stand up. We had the vet put her down. I buried her down by the creek where she loved to go swim. Jewel had had seizures off and on her whole time with use and after one such in June 2012 she could not use her back legs so once again the vet helped us put her out of her pain. Again I buried her down by the creek with chip since she liked to watch the birds in the bushes there.
Almost to the day a month later I had went out for our walk with Bosco and Daisy. I had noticed a few weeks before Bosco was loosing weight. Figured he just missed Jewel as they were fast friends.

I went out to his pen later after a walk and found him bleeding from an  ear. I finally got the bleeding stopped and took him to the vet. He had cancer real bad thru out his body. The vet put him down and I again buried him with Chip and Jewel. Daisy was my last pup and we spent even more time together our walks were 2 and some times 3 hours each time. She had slowed her eating I knew but was still and active girl on our walks. I went out one morning July 20013 to get her for our walk. she had died during the night.
I put her with the others down by the creek even though she had not been crazy about the water. One of
Daisy's last pictures.

I decided I was finished with dogs for the rest of my life.

 :)  Al

I have had dogs off and on for most of my life. The hardest part is the end. We lost Rosie in January and took a break, but have decided we have room in our hearts and home for another and are keeping our eyes and ears open. I have always believed things "happen" as they should and have found when "pressing" things don't always work out. We will be presented with the ideal companion when fate decides for us. ;)

Geez Alley, that is a wonderful and sad story. This is our dog Katy, she's part lab and chesapeake. Their first owners bred them to be good hunting dogs, but alas all nine puppies were shy and can't handle loud noises, and they were jumpy and skiddish, they could never be trained to hunt, wouldn't even get in the water, so funny and weird. Our friend bought two of them as pups, but two was too many for their household, so after 1 1/2 years we took Katy. I have loved all our dogs, but Katy and I hit it off immediately. When the time comes... It's gonna kill me ~

You might think you are finished with dogs, but I'm betting they aren't finished with you. When you take on a dog such as you have in the past, you are providing a safe and comfortable home for them, something they may never have experienced if not for you. Their journeys will almost always be shorter than ours, but that should not prevent us from enjoying those trips with them. To not do so would be a tremendous loss on our parts as well as theirs.

jen, what a neat picture!

al, what perry said.......it's a hard thing when they get sick and it's even harder when we have to make the decision to let them go. sure tugs at the heart for sometime. having said that, like perry said, it's the journey, the joy and companionship they bring to us, and it's a tremendous loss not to welcome another one into our lives and become a part of our family, when we are ready.

I'm contemplating bringing in another dog for Katy's old age. Katy came when our last lab was getting old and sleeping a lot. Her exuberant presence got him up and around and excited about keeping the cat's out of the yard. I really want a greyhound or dane, hubby would like lap and nap dog.

When I used to raise Springers (Like the one George and Barbra Auctioned off) I used to fire the .22 to signal feeding time for the puppies..  Never had a pup from my Kennel that was afraid of loud noises..

Our Dobies are getting old, and I am also hoping no more house dogs come into our lives.. it huirts too bad..  My Wifes Dobie has Diabetes, and is mostly blind.. I HAVE to get up every morning to give her the insulin, and be home EVERY night to give her the insulin..  I love that old dog, and I will not fail her, but it does put a great DENT in the things we would LIKE to be able to do.. We cannot leave, no vacation, NOTHING that would mean leaving home for more than a few hours..
Between deer and coons we have decided we will get an OUTSIDE dog.. of course, it will have a comfy spot in the wood shed where the wood furnace will keep him, or her warm in the winter..

LOL! scott let me know if do, if it works, will get some parakeets myself......chirp chirp............ :D
i have always wanted to get a dog, big dog. just to run fisherman off.  sometimes they think they can park anywhere or wander anywhere, or start a campfiire anywhere on your property with a river that runs through it.  and i would train it with two words:  NET or ROD.  on either of those commands a fisherman might be minus one or the other.................... :D

I'm a dog lover, too.  I've got 2 right now - both from the animal shelter - but about 11 years apart in age.   We got the young one Chloe (a lab/hound mix) to keep the old one Annie (an Australian Cattle dog mix) company.   Annie had been dog aggressive all her life except for our previous lab Duchess who was her best and only dog friend.   When my daughter got a puppy (Catahoula coon hound mix) and needed us to keep her for several months, Annie adopted her and they became best buds.   After that, I knew I could get another dog and just get them used to each other.   I believe the young ones keep the old ones younger and on the go.  You're right Jen, they are pack animals and they enjoy each other's company when we're at work.
Regardless of how many times Chloe pees on the carpet (just can't get her completely housebroken), I've told my hubby that I'm always going to have a dog.   They just make your life better - even though we have to let them go before we want to.

I was allergic to dogs so bad in my teens I was told I could never have one in the house, and I wanted to be a vet, .my allergist told me pre-vet would kill me.

so I haven't had many. (I guess that is relative).  We always had a dog of some kind when I was a child but usually not for too long, we'd adopt one, and find it a home when we moved. and they were pretty much its. My first adult dog Boo ended up staying with my parents for a couple of weeks and they kept her then returned 4 years later, I found her a home with a friend who had young children. 2nd dog Bambi was a chihuahua and the first to live in my house long term, she got a lot of baths, I got mattress covers a good vacuum and learned to pop pillows in the dryer often.  She was about 10 when my twins were born (was a flea covered hit by car adult rescue when I picked her up, no age known) and when the twins were 18 months and walking she got nippy. I screened 40 people finding her just the right home to retire in, she was a truly great companion.

We had dogs when the twins were young but not for long, less than a year and we lost that house.

I waited a long time before getting Bandit, and he could NEVER live in my house, found him his mom and his brother hitting the trash on the street, put a sign in the front yard, when the owner collected he said I could have a puppy.  I had him from 3 months til 3 months shy of 14, he had arthritis the last 10 years but a bit of glucosamine in a rolled up piece of deli turkey did the trick, except on that last day. I sat with him as he took his last breaths and buried him out by the keyhole pond (which I built so he'd have a drinking hole close by)

Had a couple of companion dogs for him, but temperament was an issue with one, and my schipperke bonded to bandit but not to son in laws and took off presumably for Texas when I had him with me in New Mexico.

I got a pair of German Shepherd Border Collie pups in Feb 2004, brother and sister, oh stupid me all the kids moved out and left them with me to train, Bandit was 12 at the time, and my saving grace when the female helped me dislocate my knee in the back yard.  When I got done training I had ball players that would drop to the ground at a snap of the fingers or a point and wait til I was ready before launching after the ball, but I don't know that I will train another border collie. Smart but obsessive compulsive.  Spike died in January 2013. Val I rehomed in 2008 so I could bring my dogs in the house, she was the cat hater of the pair.

Dogs are pack animals and I work a lot so I try not to have less than 3, one can ride and the other 2 have company. I try to spread ages out, which is helping as Bronx is aging and while he's doing well after his mast cell surgery, he will not live forever. He is rotti - bmd, and big, 7 years old.

The kennel fence went around the pond after Val helped me dislocate my knee trying to keep her out of the pond. Spike was a big time water lounger too...

Hi Hamptor  :)  '"You're right Jen, they are pack animals and they enjoy each other's company when we're at work.

But when we take a dog away from it's pack, then don't let it live in the house with it's new human pack... they live a lonely life. Now, if there were two or three other dogs in the shed with the new dog, that would be different.

I'm on the lookout for a second dog for our dog Katy, she's 10 years now, and it would be good for her old age to have a companion.

Bandit had to be an outdoor dog as he was German Shepherd and Samoyed, I groomed him myself every spring and took 5 bags of undercoat off of him with a grooming rake, he weighed about 70 lbs in his prime. I kept him because I had a toddler and was at home most days, I also had 2 children in elementary school so when I returned to work I was working relatively short days, and I am a gardener. Outdoors a couple of hours most days, he was my walk around the city block buddy, he harvested the cantaloupes as soon as they ripened and played ball til he got them popped open, escorted children, my 2 year old could hold his leash and walk him, (terrified the utility workers when I let her though).  He was a sweet heart. First I kind of got stuck with a young rottweiler female who had been probably stolen then dumped, never could find her owner, found her a home after a month.  When I got a rescue dog who turned out to be really aggressive toward other animals and Bandit and had to turn her in to the pound after about a year of attempting retrain, he was very lonely. By this time I had gone to work. But I ended up with Petie the kindergarten bunny and they were friends. Then I ended up with a schipperke pup who was petie's nightmare but Bandit's toy. so he always had someone. He would lay in the kitchen floor and nap on rainy days, far from the ac inlet vent.  I have not gotten another long haired dog since.  Spike had some undercoat but not much. of my current dogs only the smallest has much fluff and again, not much.   But most dog behavior problems come from loneliness and I always have a couple of dogs around.

Hey Al, the black dog in the 4th picture from the top puts me in mind of Perry, he's on point, but has a question mark shaped tail. meaning he don't know what's there.  Jack
